HP 14 Inch Laptop PC 14-ep0520sa
When i plug in my USC-C docking station (connected to monitors) it doesn't charge my laptop or display onto my monitors. Instead i get a message saying it might not work properly. When i look in device manager, it gives an asterisk and even if i disable and reenable nothing happens. I've also ensured that all updates are up to date.
I know its not the dock / connectors / monitors as I have another HP laptop which is connecting fine using the same set up.
Does this laptop not support DP Alt mode, or is something broken?

@sjbherself, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP 14 Inch Laptop PC!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
From what you’ve described, it sounds like your HP 14-ep0520sa might not support DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C. Not all HP laptops have this capability, as USB-C ports can serve different functions depending on the model. Some support charging and data transfer but not video output.
To confirm:
Check the specs – You can verify whether your model supports DP Alt Mode in the official HP documentation or product specifications.
Device Manager Warning – The asterisk in Device Manager suggests a driver or hardware issue. Have you checked for any missing or outdated drivers under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" or "Display adapters"? You might also try reinstalling the USB drivers:
Right-click the affected device, choose "Uninstall," then restart your laptop to allow Windows to reinstall the driver automatically.
BIOS & Firmware Updates – Sometimes, updating your BIOS and firmware can resolve USB-C compatibility issues. You can find the latest updates for your model on the HP Support website.
Try a Different USB-C Port (if available) – Some laptops have multiple USB-C ports, but only specific ones support charging or video output.
If your laptop indeed doesn’t support DP Alt Mode, you may need an alternative solution, such as an HDMI adapter or a dock that supports video output via other means. Let me know if you’d like help finding a compatible setup!
Hope this helps, and I’m happy to troubleshoot further if needed. 😊
Take care, and have an amazing day!
