I have Pavilion laptop with USB-C port, I also have Apple thunderbolt display which i am using with mac book pro. Recently i brought two adapters one HDMI to miniDVI and USB-C to thunderbolt-2. I connected HDMI port with my laptop and another end to my apple thunderbolt display, it inserted very well but this arrangement does not work.
I connected USB-C to thunderbolt-2 port but this unfortunately does not work too.
Any way to make it work or if there is no solution to connect my laptop to my apple display, then let me know at least i will hope for this and stop buying adapters.
Appreciate help and support.
Best Regards

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I see you have a concern regarding connecting this laptop to a Macbook pro. No worries, I'll be glad to help you.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Are you trying to set it up for the first time? When was the last time it worked?
Have you tried to connect this HP laptop to a different display to check if that works. If the laptop works on a different PC, then this could be an issue with the Thunderbolt display.
In this scenario, I would suggest you contact your Apple tech support.
Have you tried to use different genuine HP Part? For more details, please go through this link: HP PCs, Tablets and Accessories - Using USB Type-C to Transfer Power and Data
Hope this answers your question.

Hello Jeet_Singh,
I have the same situation, I own one HP Elite x2 1012 G1 and I'd like to use my Mac 27" retina display. Is it possible?. I don't want to come back to my old MacBook pro.
Could you please give me a solution?.
Thanks a lot,
Santi

Dear Santi,
USB Type-C looks like Thunderbolt-3 port but it is not. I called HP support and came to know with only Type-C you cannot connect apple thunderbolt display, this what the support told me, so went with Dell XPS which has thunderbolt-3 port. If any laptop with thunderbolt-3 or 2 can be connected to apple thunderbolt display.
If the port in the laptop is thunderbolt-3 (looks similar like type-C with with a electrical kind of symbol), then you require a apabter between TB-3 to 2 (apple supplies this separately). Old apple display has thunderbolt-2 port. Display need to be powered separately and laptop too separately powered. Then with some bios setting you can use thunder bolt display.
I am using Dell XPS - 9570 laptop, i connect thunderbolt-3 port of laptop to adapter TB-3 to 2, TB-2 of the adapter to apple display and also change the bios setting. Then it works. Any laptop, i believe hP Envy or some 360 model has TB-3 port. If your laptop has TB-2 port you can try directly just connection does not help, you need to change the bios setting.
Hope this helps. I struggle a lot to make it happen.

Dear Jeet,
No email from you. You can still contact me via sethubalaji@hotmail.com.
I am successful with TB-3 to apple display connection, but still interested in the method to connect HDMI to TB-2 display setting to make it work.
Please share the solution if you have.

Thanks a lot for your answer!
My HP Elite x2 1012 has one USB type C slot, I checked the specs and it says that it is compatible with USB 3.1 (admits Thunderbolt 3). So I guess I have the same situation as you. I'll get one TB3 to 2 and will try.
By the way, what is the BIOS settings change I have to do?
Best regards,
Santi
