HP Spectre x360 13-ae011dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've seen a few other questions that are similar, but none that are describing my issues so I thought I'd post a separate question.

I am trying to connect my HP Spectre x360 to an external monitor (Asus) using the QGeeM USB-C to HDMI adapter. An HDMI cord is plugged into the monitor and the adapter, while the USB-C end of the adapter is plugged into my laptop. I've tried both USB-C ports.

Here's what happens when I plug in the adapter:

  • Under Display in Settings, it shows 2 screens and looks as if it will allow me to rearrange them. However, nothing happens on the external monitor. It doesn't let me identify the monitor and says "device not detected" when I click "detect." When I tried to choose any of the "multiple display" options, a message comes up saying it will revert to original settings in XX seconds unless I confirm. I confirm. Then nothing happens.
  • When I choose "advance display options" and try to click the link to view drivers and other info, nothing happens.
  • On many of the times I've tried to connect the adapter, the mouse stops displaying on the screen. It still moves, but I can't see the mouse pointer.

What I've tried:

  • I've updated BIOS.
  • I've ensured all the updates are current and there are no drivers needed.
  • I've tried to download a USB-C to HDMI driver from the HP website. Once the driver is downloaded, I get a message that says something like, "make sure a monitor is connected via HDMI" and I have the option to continue. The next message says something like, "no device detected" and my only option is to exit. I've made sure the monitor is powered on and is in HDMI mode. I've done this a few times with the same results.
  • I've done all the plugging/unplugging, restarting, etc. dance and the only thing it does it bring the mouse pointer back.

From what I can tell in the manual, it looks like the HP Spectre x360's USB-C ports are capable sharing data, meaning it should be able to send the screen to the external monitor. I can't figure out another reason why my laptop seems to be sort of acknowledging the monitor is there, but doesn't really want to be friends. I would greatly appreciate any help! Thanks.

Any chance you could check the Adapter. or connect the Notebook to a monitor through USB Type C directly?

Thank you

That's actually what I did! I got an HDMI to USB-C cable instead of using the adapter and it worked. Not sure why the adapter wouldn't work, but for anyone reading this who has issues with an adapter--just get the HDMI to USB-C instead.
