ProBook 430 G4
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi There,

I've got my new notebook ProBook 430 G4 last week! Now, I'd like to use it with my (big) monitor Dell U2711 that has a resolution of 2560x1440 (WQHD).

As only option on the ProBook 430 G4 I can only use HDMI for output in such a resolution (see tech spec) but HDMI - HDMI didn't worked at all (only supported 1080p).

Now, how could I use my new notebook on my big screen? Is there any option for using HDMI - DVI cable? I've heard that this is not supported up to 2560x1440...

Thanks for your help!

Matthias

@Freitagabend

The HDMI port on HP 4x0 G4 machines (in your case 430 G4) supports more than 4K video as shown on its specs

HDMI

Supports direct connection to high-definition displays with up to 4096 x 2160 @24 Hz resolution and 7-channel audio with one convenient cable (Cable not included.)

Have you tried a HDMI version 2.0 cable ?

Regards.

It's an HDMI 1.4 port which is supposed to be able to drive a WQHD display. Some HDMI cables are retro devices that only work with older HDMI versions so if you can borrow a newer high quality cable you might try that. Lastly your monitor has a DP (displayport) connector and you might try an HDMI to DP adapter cable.

Thanks, Provost, for your reply!

I googled the cable solution and understood that HDMI -> DP will only work one way from DP to HDMI. HDMI to DP is working only with an active adapter not with a cable only. All active adapters HDMI -> DP that I've found were supporting only up to 1080p which is not suifficient for WQHD...

Not shure too if the solution with HDMI -> DVI cable will work up to 2560x1440. Any experience?

Can't understand why HP is not implementing miniDP in today's notebooks instead of VGA (but buidling nice notebooks though)...

Yes, I've tried a HDMI 2.0 cable but the Dell U2711 is blocking HDMI input @1080p -> not nice

Therefore I've to go either on DVI-D or DP. But for both I've not found any (cable) solution for more than FullHD...

DVI is not going to add any function...DVI is just HDMI without sound.

This would mean that a HDMI<->DVI-D cable would be suifficient for a resolution of 2506x1440 even if written in spec of cable that only supported up to 1080p?

HP Recommended

No I am saying going HDMI to DVI will not make any difference...if HDMI only allows FHD then DVI will not allow higher resolution.

Sorry, I don't want to twist your words...

The HDMI output port on my ProBook 430 G4 is HDMI 1.4 therefore no issue with HDMI resolution output. But: I've not found any cable HDMI -> DVI that is mentioning a resolution higher than 1920x1200.

So the issue is more how to get full resolution of HDMI output to the input of the monitor.

If DVI is blocking really at 1920x1200 the consequence would be that I couldn't use my Dell U2711 on full resolution anymore due to only possible HDMI output port and limitations on HDMI-DVI.

Does anyone has experience if HDMI-DVI is really limited to 1920x1200?

I am sitting here at my desk using a pair of 4k monitors with my Zbook G3 and I have set up multiple offices here in my business using multiple 4k monitors. Never got a DVI connection to allow anything more than FHD. HDMI has been hit and miss I think one of the 8 or so 4K monitors in my office is connected by HDMI from a new model Lenovo Thinkpad docking station. All the others use DP. I could not get HDMI to give me 4K resolution with direct HDMI or USB-C to HDMI but direct DP or USB-C to DP "just works". So I am a big fan of DP and HDMI not so much.
