HP EliteBook 8460p
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I recently bought a referbished HP EliteBook 8460p.  I would like to connect the laptop to my tv to watch videos. My laptop does not have a HDMI but does have a VGA port. I bought a new VGA to HDMI cable to connect the two but when I play the videos its not showing on the tv. (I do have the tv set to the channel needed for the HDMI). I didn't know if I need to do something with the laptop as far as settings go or what my problem is.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Lisa

You also have a DisplayPort...it is more like HDMI in that both are digital video. A DP to HDMI adapter should work:

Thank you Huffer, I will have to buy one of those and try it.

Didn't know if there was something that I needed to set up in the setting in order for it to project onto the tv.

No it will just treat the TV as another monitor...when you get it connected tap Windows key + p and it will give you a menu for cloned displays, extended, external (tv) only, etc.

Huffer,

Thanks for all the advice you gave on this thread. I purchased the cable you suggested and followed your direction on choosing the TV as the output by the windows key + P.  The only problem remains the lack of sound on the TV. The sound is only heard through the laptop speakers.  My laptop is an HP Elitebook 8540W.

Thank you for your time!
