HP Spectre X360 15t CH000
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi!

So while I was using my HP Spectre X360 with the i7 8705g, I discovered that a red halo/line had developed along the vertical axis of the screen originating from wherever there is a white section of the screen as shown here. Its an extremely noticeable issue and makes the laptop unusable for even moderately color accurate work as you can see it very clearly on darker backgrounds here and even on the top edge of the screen. The screen also on startup completely freaks out even in BIOS, here with constant flickering and only stabilizes after signing in.

The interesting and weird thing now is that on immediate startup, when I open something that is white - there is no red halo at all, and the red halo only occurs a second or two later as if the laptop almost forgot that the monitor had an issue. (my original thought was software issue, until I discovered the startup fuzz). I haven't dropped this laptop, split anything on it, or put it through extreme temperatures. It's been sitting on my desk for the past few weeks plugged into an external monitor (which does not show the artifacts) however even when I unplug or restart the system the issue persists. I've tried updating every driver from intel/amd video card to wifi, updating my windows, going back versions, etc. I couldn't find anything about this on the internet.

Could this be a faulty panel, or be a slightly unplugged cable to the motherboard? Has anyone seen this issue before and is there any home remedy? I've already contacted HP support, and will be shipping my unit back to be repaired - however that will be taking me out of operation for a week where I won't be able to do any work and was hoping if anyone had an alternative solution that I have yet to try out.

@Kyleli I've gone through your post and the links, I'm afraid the LCD seems to be the cause of the malfunction going by this link you've shared and having it repaired via HP is the best thing forward,

Unfortunately, there are no easy fixes or home remedies for this hardware failure.

I suggest you back up all important data into an external source and rent/borrow an alternate device until you get this one repaired by HP.

Hi, glad to be here!

Thanks for solving my (probably painfully obvious in hindsight) question! I suppose that answers my worst fears. Was hoping by some magical chance it had something to do with a software induced screen refresh or a phase issue (although phase is only a vga thing, now that I think about it) because of the issue only appearing after fully loading into the OS. That was, at least until I realized the issue was also in BIOS + Safe Boot.

I do wonder however, what might have caused it, perhaps repetitive strain by keeping the monitor on 24/7 for a few weeks? Or perhaps it has been an issue for a while and I never noticed it before and was caused by pressure on the screen when closed and in the case.

Thanks again for the quick reply,

Kyle

@Kyleli The pleasure is all mine, that said, keeping the monitor on 24/7 seems like a possible reason, it's always good to turn off your device when not in use, to save power and to keep it running longer 😉

That said, if you need anything else, feel free to get back to us, anytime and have a good day, ahead.

Good luck with the repairs, godspeed.
