I had my HP envy (model #17-AE151NR) for awhile now, but would like to now attach an external monitor (preferably 8k), where previously not used one before. I have several different ports, with which I can connect, but I'm not sure:

  • which ones will work,
  • what I need to look for in a monitor,
  • what's the maximum output specifications I can expect,
  • what is the maximum refresh rate I can expect, etcetera?

I have these questions and more, but can't seem to find it when I look up the system specifications on the HP website, nor other websites I've looked up.

QUESTIONS:

  • Can someone please help me find the Video Out Specs & Port Specs, by including a link, or letting me know where to go?
  • What would happen if I connected a monitor that had a higher resolution then my computer puts out, etc?

I'd like to pair it with the fastest, highest resolution, etcetera monitor that I can find on the market. Thank you so much for your help and have a great day!

Hi @URSilly,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Here’s what I found about your HP ENVY 17‑ae151nr external video capabilities:

1. Video Output & Port Specifications

From HP’s official spec sheet:

  • USB‑C (Gen 1) port: Supports DisplayPort 1.2, along with data transfer up to 5 Gb/s and HP Sleep and Charge.
  • HDMI port: Present (version not specified, but typically supports up to 4K @ 30 Hz on this model).

2. Maximum Supported Resolutions & Refresh Rates

Via USB‑C (DP 1.2):

  • Up to 4K (3840 × 2160) @ 60 Hz
  • Theoretically supports 5K @ 60 Hz in reduced color subsampling, but HP doesn’t certify that option for this device.

Via HDMI:

  • Likely supports 4K (3840 × 2160) @ 30 Hz
  • Can definitely handle 1080p @ 60 Hz without issue.

So, the best option is USB‑C for highest resolution and refresh rate.

3. Choosing an External Monitor

If you're aiming for 8K:

  • This laptop cannot output 8K, as that requires DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1, not present here.
  • You’ll want a 4K monitor to match your laptop’s maximum.

If you're open to upgrading your setup later, pair your ENVY with a high-quality 4K @ 60 Hz monitor now, and when ready, switch to hardware that supports 8K @ 60 Hz, such as a newer HP notebook with DisplayPort 1.4 / Thunderbolt 4.

4. What Happens With Higher Res Displays?

If you connect an 8K monitor:

  • It will detect the monitor, but the laptop will only send a signal up to 4K @ 60 Hz (USB‑C) or 4K @ 30 Hz (HDMI).
  • The monitor will scale the image: you'll likely get black borders or a scaled image centered on the screen.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
