Just updated from a Windows 7 machine to Windows 10. Brought the laptop home and not can't install my HP L1950 2nd display because apparently HP doesn't have a driver for it. Does anyone have a workaround or idea how I can get it to work? I seriously do NOT want to buy another monitor. 😞

Hi:
Are you sure you don't need the graphics driver for W10?
Go to the device manager, click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category.
If there is a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter listed there, the graphics driver is missing and needs to be installed.
Monitors typically don't need drivers, and if they do, you should be able to manually install the Vista driver.
Here's how to do that...
I have zipped up and attached the 32 bit monitor driver, below.
Download and unzip the file to its folder.
Do not do anything with the files in the folder.
Go to the device manager, click to expand the monitors category.
Click on the Generic PNP Monitor listed there.
Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and browse to the driver folder you unzipped.
Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and the driver should install.
Then restart the PC.

Hi Paul -
Thanks for the reply. The computer is brand new and has display drivers installed. I was surprised that when I went to add the additional display, nothing showed up. When I went to the HP site, it said that there was not a Windows 10 driver for that monitor. I have no clue why that would be. All the online support information basically said was trying asking the community which led me here. It's a great monitor and a perfect size. I don't want to buy another. I am hopeful that someone has a workaround solution. Fingers crossed!

You're very welcome.
The only workaround I could think of would be to install the Vista driver I posted.
If it is a new PC, then it must have come with W10 64 bit, and the 32 bit driver I posted won't work.
HP hasn't made a PC with a 32 bit operating system in years.
I have zipped up and attached the Vista 64 bit file below. Use the same method I posted above to install it.

Yes, it has both Windows 10-32 and 10-64. Just so I'm clear, a Vista operating system driver will work with Windows 10? I recall many problems back in the day with a laptop I had using Vista so I just want to be sure. 🙂
Thanks again!

The driver should install and label the monitor as an L1950 instead of a generic P N P monitor.
Whether or not you will be able to see it as a second monitor with the driver installed, that I do not know.
Since that is the latest driver for that monitor, it will have to do.
It was the Vista operating system itself that was buggy, not the hardware drivers for things like monitors.

Hi Paul -
Again, thank you for your patience and for continuing to try and help me. I did as you suggested and downloaded the 64 bit Vista driver. What I don't see, though, is any generic PNP monitor - the only one that shows up is in the device manager is the laptop - Lenovo Display 1920x1080. Is there somewhere else I need to look?
