HP Pavilion Plus 14 inch Laptop PC 14-ew1000 (7X846AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

The document I´m working in is highlighted, but the rest of the opened windows are turned into darkness.
This makes it impossible to work in to documents in parallell for example to word or one wordk and one excel doc. How to fix this annoying problem? Can´t find anywhere to inhibit this function.
Thanks in advance for the help 🙂

Hi @HaakanJoa

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how distracting it feels when inactive windows dim and you lose the ability to work fluidly across multiple documents. You’ve described the situation very clearly, and I appreciate the effort you’ve already put into trying to find a way to disable it.

Let’s go through the steps to restore a consistent, bright view across all your open windows so you can work in Word and Excel side by side without interruption.

Steps to Disable Window Dimming in Windows 11

Check Focus Assist and Focus Mode

  • Open Settings > System > Focus.
  • If “Focus mode” is enabled, turn it off.
  • This feature can dim background windows to reduce distractions.

Adjust Transparency and Visual Effects

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects.
  • Toggle off “Transparency effects.”
  • This prevents inactive windows from appearing darker or shaded.

Check Contrast Themes

  • Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
  • Scroll down to “Contrast themes.”
  • If a contrast theme is applied, switch back to “None.”
  • Contrast themes can cause inactive windows to appear dimmed.

Disable Background Dimming in Multitasking

  • Go to Settings > System > Multitasking.
  • Look for “Snap windows” and expand the options.
  • Uncheck “Show the dimmed background when snapping a window.”
  • This ensures all windows remain equally visible.

Check Graphics Settings

  • Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  • Ensure your apps (Word, Excel) are set to “Let Windows decide” or “High performance.”
  • Misconfigured graphics settings can sometimes cause dimming effects.

Update Display Drivers

  • Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  • Enter your HP Pavilion Plus 14-ew1000 model.
  • Download and install the latest Intel graphics driver.
  • Restart your laptop after installation.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
