Hi @AradhanaC

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion Laptop PC 14-dv1000 is experiencing a display issue where the screen goes blank after extended use, but the system continues to function in the background. This could be related to overheating, driver issues, or power settings.

Here are detailed steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

1. Check for Overheating

  • Ensure Proper Ventilation: Place the laptop on a flat, hard surface to allow airflow. Avoid using it on soft surfaces like beds or couches.
  • Clean the Vents: Use compressed air to clean the vents and fans to remove dust buildup.
  • Use a Cooling Pad: If overheating persists, consider using a laptop cooling pad to improve airflow.

2. Update Graphics Drivers

  • Open Device Manager:
    • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Update the Driver:
    • Expand Display Adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update Driver.
    • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • Visit Manufacturer’s Website:
    • If the automatic update doesn’t work, visit the HP Support page or the graphics card manufacturer’s website (Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD) to download and install the latest driver.

3. Adjust Power Settings

  • Change Sleep Settings:
    • Go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep.
    • Under Screen, set a longer time for when the screen turns off.
  • Disable Adaptive Brightness:
    • Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
    • Click Change plan settings next to your selected power plan, then Change advanced power settings.
    • Expand Display and turn off Enable adaptive brightness.

4. Run Hardware Diagnostics

  • Use HP Diagnostics Tool:
    • Restart the laptop and press F2 repeatedly to access the HP Diagnostics menu.
    • Run a full system test to check for hardware issues, especially with the display or GPU.
  • External Monitor Test:
    • Connect an external monitor to the laptop using HDMI or VGA.
    • If the external monitor works fine, the issue may be with the laptop’s display hardware.

5. Update BIOS

6. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop and unplug it from the power source.
  • Disconnect all peripherals (USB drives, external monitors, etc.).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to drain residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and turn the laptop back on.

7. Check for Windows Updates

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click Check for updates and install any available updates.
