HP Recommended

HP notebook 12-f271wm windows 10 did purchase the continued support.  computer was on yesterday, then screen turned black, led light and wifi light still lit.  Got it to start, it updated and turned  off and I cannot get it off the black screen.   I examined the battery, did the hard restart, nothing is working!

Hi @EB1955

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how worrying it feels when the notebook powers on but only shows a black screen, even after you’ve already examined the battery and tried a hard restart. Thank you for carefully checking those basics—it shows real persistence. Let’s go step by step to isolate whether this is a display, startup, or update issue on your HP Notebook 12‑f271wm:

Check display output

  • Connect the notebook to an external monitor or TV using HDMI.
  • If the external display shows Windows, the issue is with the notebook’s built‑in screen or its connection.

Perform a BIOS startup test

  • Turn the notebook off completely.
  • Press the power button and immediately tap Esc repeatedly.
  • The Startup Menu should appear.
  • From there, press F2 to run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the System Test → Display Test to confirm if the panel responds.

Reset graphics driver in Windows

  • If the black screen appears after Windows loads, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B.
  • This forces the graphics driver to reset and may bring the display back.

Boot into Safe Mode

  • Power on and hold the power button to force shutdown as soon as the HP logo appears.
  • Repeat this 2–3 times until Windows Recovery opens.
  • Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart → Enable Safe Mode.
  • If the screen works in Safe Mode, the issue is likely with a driver update.

Update BIOS and drivers

  • Visit HP’s driver page for your notebook:
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers
  • Enter your product number (12‑f271wm) and install the latest BIOS and graphics drivers.
  • Restart and check if the black screen clears.

Power reset with battery removed

  • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery if it is removable.
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reinsert the battery, connect power, and turn the notebook back on.

You’ve already shown great care in troubleshooting. These steps will confirm whether the black screen is caused by the display hardware, a driver issue, or the recent update.

Would you like me to also share how to run a System Restore from the recovery environment? That can roll back the update if it’s the source of the problem.
