Good Day,,
At about 11:30pm, I finished up work on my laptop. I closed it (not turned off) and went home. Upon arriving home, I opened the laptop and got a blank screen (after 12:00am). Connected to TV through HDMI, desktop shows up (realized that the display is backlit). Camera works, touch screen works. Checked latest updates, no update occurred until 0641. Worked with Windows chat, found optional updates and one critical update, performed all updates and checked repeatedly for more; none available. Last recommendation was to update BIOS (bought laptop in 2017, last BIOS date is 6/12/18). HP Update shows this BIOS is current. No error messages along the way.
Tried starting computer with WinKey +B, no display, nor backlit or desktop on TV. Tried hard reset, same results. Power + esc, same thing. Anything other than just turning the power on results in black display (not backlit) and no startup or desktop on TV.

Hi @Mike4130,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP ENVY Notebook 17 is displaying a blank screen but the backlight is on, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.
- Power cycle the laptop: Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if it's removable). Then, press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual power. Reinsert the battery (if applicable) and reconnect the power adapter. Try turning on the laptop again and see if the display comes back.
- Check external display connections: If you have connected an external monitor or TV to your laptop, make sure the connections are secure and the external display is set to the correct input source. Sometimes, the laptop may default to the external display, causing the built-in screen to appear blank.
- Adjust brightness settings: Use the function keys on your keyboard (usually labeled with a sun icon) to increase the brightness of the screen. Sometimes, the brightness may be set too low, making it appear as if the screen is blank.
- Connect to an external display: If possible, connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable. This will help determine if the issue is with the laptop's display or the graphics card. If the external display works fine, it suggests a problem with the laptop's screen or its connection.
- Update graphics drivers: Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can cause display issues. Visit the HP support website and download the latest graphics drivers for your specific model. Install the drivers and restart the laptop to see if the issue is resolved.
- Hardware issue: If none of the above steps resolve the problem, it's possible that there is a hardware issue with the laptop's display or graphics card.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
