My camera seems to be disconnected from my laptop, and it does not show the light.

Hi @Celia08

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for flagging that—let’s get your camera back online. If the webcam light doesn’t turn on and the camera seems disconnected, it’s likely one of these culprits:

Step-by-Step Fixes for HP Laptop Camera Not Working

1. Check for a Physical Shutter or Privacy Switch

Some HP models have a tiny manual shutter or privacy switch near the webcam. It’s easy to miss and not well documented:

  • Look closely at the top bezel of your screen.
  • Slide or press any switch near the camera lens.
  • If it’s closed, the camera won’t activate and the light won’t turn on.

A user on HP’s forum discovered this was the issue after reinstalling Windows and testing across multiple OSes.

2. Enable Camera in BIOS

Sometimes the internal camera is disabled at the firmware level:

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc, then F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Navigate to Advanced or Device Configuration.
  • Look for Integrated Camera or Webcam and ensure it’s set to Enabled.
  • Save and exit.

3. Check Device Manager

Let’s confirm Windows still sees the camera:

  • Press Win + X → choose Device Manager
  • Expand Imaging Devices or Cameras
  • If you see your webcam:
    • Right-click → Uninstall device
    • Restart your laptop to reinstall it automatically
  • If it’s missing:
    • Click ViewShow hidden devices
    • Still missing? Try scanning for hardware changes

4. Update or Reinstall Drivers

If the camera shows up but doesn’t work:

  • Visit HP’s driver page
  • Enter your laptop’s model number
  • Download and install the camera driver or Intel Imaging/IO driver

5. Check Windows Privacy Settings

Sometimes apps are blocked from using the camera:

  • Go to SettingsPrivacy & SecurityCamera
  • Make sure Camera access is turned on
  • Enable access for apps like Zoom, Teams, etc.

If none of these work, let me know your exact HP model (e.g., Pavilion 15-egXXXX) and I’ll pull the correct driver or BIOS instructions for you. We’ll get this sorted.
