Spectre x360 X7V20UA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Spectre x360 13" laptop (X7V20UA#ABA) which has  2 USB C ports and no video ports, running Windows 10. I also have an HP Envy 27S video monitor with USB C input (W5A12AA#ABA).

When I plug the laptop into the monitor (using the USB-C cable included with the monitor) the laptop charges, but it never detects the monitor as an additional display.

if I open the Display Settings and click "detect" it says "didn't detect another display".

I installed the driver from the HP Support website but that did not make a difference. The "HP My Display" app that got installed with the drivers shows that I have a second display "HP ENVY 27 (6CM7xxxxxx)" indicating that it can communicate enough to get the serial number of my display.

How do I proceed?

Will these products even work together?

Hi @glacierjay

I recommend you to go monitor menu and then input control and select input as USB type C and check if it helps.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi @glacierjay

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query in this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

I reviewed your post and I understand that when you are connecting your monitor to the laptop the monitor is not getting detected.

Don’t worry, we will work together to resolve this issue and It’s a pleasure to assist you in this regard.

I understand that the monitor and the laptop both are connected to the USB type C ports on both ends. If that’s the case then the monitor will not get detected. On one end either on the computer side or the monitor side use a USB type C to HDMI/VGA adapter for the display to work with your PC.

When you connect USB type C to another device USB type C port only data can be transferred.

Hope that answers your question and you have a great day.

Sorry, wrong answer. Look at the page on hp.com for the HP Envy S27 monitor:  "With versatile USB-C™ connectivity, the ENVY 27 Display surpasses the limits of a typical display. Just one cable delivers video and charges your PC with up to 60 watts of power."

Since it is apparently a new technology to you, look up Thunderbolt some time. This is part of what's exciting about USB-C connector on the Spectre x360. You can do video and charge through one port.

I wonder if the actual problem is that the monitor is 4K but the graphics driver on the laptop can't handle this resolution.  The HP phone support line has confirmed that the Spectre x360 can do video and charge through the USB-C port. They just can't tell me how to make this monitor work with the Envy 27s monitor.  Apparently there's an updated display driver that "should" handle 4K.

I'll post more when/if I get a resoltion from phone support.

The following was suggested by the HP phone-in team, but does not work for me:

Work around the issue by changing the OSD DP-Hot-Plug-Detection setting from Low-Power to Always-Active:

Open the OnScreenDisplay main menu
Select Input Control...
Select DP Hot-Plug Detection
Select Always Active
Select Save and Return

Still working on it, but that made no difference. I still get a blank display on the monitor when it is connected via USB-C to the laptop. Interesting to note that the monitor does say "connected" to "USB-C Video" before it goes to sleep saying "no signal detected"

Hi @glacierjay

I tried the same set up in our lab here and I am able to get the display without any issues.

I would like to know how many USB type C ports are there on your computer? If there is more than one port, I recommend you to try connecting it to a different port and check.

If possible I suggest you connect the monitor to a different computer and check if it helps.

Let me know how it goes.

I have 2 USB C ports on my PC, same as the photo. Looks like the same laptop. I have tried plugging into the other USB-C port with same result.

I do not have another PC with USB-C. I tried it via HDMI but nothing displays.

Thanks for confirming that this combination of laptop and monitor can work together. I was about to give up and send the monitor back but will keep trying.

Amazing! It works! Thanks!

I have a full 3480x2160 display on the Envy 27s monitor connected by USB-C to my Spectre x360 13" laptop. The laptop is also charging at the same time as it is displaying. This is all through just one USB-C connection. Got to love it...

I overlooked the obvious -- I had looked at the input control setting, it showed USB-C "connected"  so I assumed it was also selected as the input. I had not pressed the "check mark" option to actually make the monotor take its input from USB-C -- had assumed that if it says "connected" it means it is also the selected input.  I appreciate your staying with me through the process.

The monitor controls are awkward to reach -- on the back-right side. You can't see them at all and there is no instruction manual online or with the product (why does HP do this??). My advice to others trying to connect to the monitor: start with the top button if you can find it and use your imagination about what the buttons might mean...  don't touch the bottom button as it is the power switch.

I had someone from HP phone support update the graphcs driver and a few other drivers on the PC but did not carefully follow what she did at the time (especially since the process did not result in anything showing on the display). I don't know if that was necessary or not, but I'd recommend to anyone else trying to use these products together that they should also update the graphics driver just in case.

Thanks again,

Jay
