hp 15-da0033wm

i have 2 of these laptops and i want to find out if there is a way to turn off the touchpad when a mouse is connected?  my thumbs are always tapping the pad and causing the curser to relocate and then i find i'm typing in the wrong spot.  i tried updating the drivers and that did not help. and in the settings i do not see any way to turn off the touchpad.

it now is win11 home 23h2  i'm expecting it to go to 24h2 soon but my other laptop the same model has 24h2 and that also does not turn off the touchpad with a mouse connected.

there must be a way to do this outside of taking it apart and pulling the cable off. thanks

Hi @corvairbob,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

You can configure your HP 15-da0033wm laptop to disable the touchpad automatically when a mouse is connected by adjusting the touchpad settings in Windows. Here’s how:

Option 1: Adjust Settings in Windows

Open Settings:

  • Press Windows + I to open the Settings app.

Navigate to Touchpad Settings:

  • Go to Devices > Touchpad.

Look for the Disable Option:

  • Scroll down to the "Touchpad" section.
  • If your laptop has the appropriate driver, you might see an option such as:
    • Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected.
  • Turn this option off.

Option 2: Use the Synaptics Driver Settings

If your laptop uses a Synaptics touchpad, you may have additional options to configure:

Access Touchpad Settings:

  • Press Windows + R, type control, and press Enter to open the Control Panel.
  • Go to Hardware and Sound > Mouse > Device Settings or Touchpad (the exact tab name depends on the driver).

Find the Mouse Connection Option:

  • Look for a setting like Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached and enable it.

Apply and Save:

  • Click Apply, then OK to save the changes.

none of that worked.  i think i will have to take the back off and just unplug the touchpad. to bad it did not have the same type as the 6540 laptops where you tapped the top left corner and that turned off the touch pad.  i went thru tons of different ways to get it disabled and nothing works. i even went and had hp scan the laptop and find missing drivers and i installed all of them and still it fails.  but thanks for trying.

Hi @corvairbob,

I am sorry to hear that the above steps did not help much but i do appreciate your efforts in performing the troubleshooting steps.

To uninstall and reinstall the touchpad drivers on your HP laptop, follow these steps:

Step 1: Uninstall Touchpad Drivers

Open Device Manager:

  • Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.

Find the Touchpad:

  • In Device Manager, expand the Mice and other pointing devices section.
  • Look for your touchpad device, which might be listed as something like "Synaptics," "ELAN," or "HP" depending on the manufacturer.

Uninstall the Device:

  • Right-click on the touchpad device and select Uninstall device.
  • A confirmation window will appear. If there’s an option to delete the driver software for this device, check it, then click Uninstall.

Restart Your Laptop:

  • After the uninstallation, restart your laptop to ensure the device is fully removed.

Step 2: Reinstall Touchpad Drivers

Go to HP Support Website:

  • Visit the HP Support website and enter your laptop's model number.
  • Navigate to the Drivers & Downloads section and search for the touchpad driver under Input Devices.

Download the Latest Driver:

  • Download the appropriate driver for your laptop’s operating system (usually labeled as "Synaptics" or "ELAN" driver for most HP laptops).

Install the Driver:

  • Once the driver file is downloaded, open it and follow the on-screen instructions to install it.

Restart Your Laptop:

  • After installation, restart your laptop for the changes to take effect.

Now follow the below steps again to change the settings when a mouse is connected.
