Hi,

HP support.

Remote assisstance is a very tricky business. Recently an agent from your team asked for the access to solve an issue regarding the touch screen of my laptop and without informing me he clicked my laptop to sleep and I had all my accounts logged on. I want to know if this remote access support is legitimate? can i trust it? and if so please inform the agents to not shut down the PCs without the customers permission.

Hi

Remote access from HP is legitimate ie if you are sure you had called in to HP support and an agent there had taken control by having you log in to hp.com/123.

Normally if any drivers or devices are uninstalled or reinstalled a system reboot would be required so I do not see anything wrong in that.

But i agree that the agent should have asked permission or made sure you weren't working on something / had unsaved work before doing so.

I would also suggest that whenever a remote session is initiated you are always in front of the PC and can see everything that the agent is doing

I have been recently contact by a so called HP Smart Tech advising that I have some errors on my computer that needs to be fixed. That my computer was signalling HP about the errors and I needed to have them cleared up. Ofcourse I questioned this person, I was able to provide me my email, computer type, the date I purchase it and even had a phone number I don't give to business. With this I was a little at ease. The next day, this person walked me through my computer to show me the supposed errors. In which he stated that it would make my computer crash. I told him that I don't have any problems with my computer. He had me run this "eventvwr" and then had me run: "smarturl.it/hptool" Suddenly, there was a remote access was established. The person then passed the phone to someone else, then they asked me how do I use my computer, I told them "school" they then asked me if I used my computer to access shopping or banking information". Immediately, I asked them, why did do you need that information, I now know you are a scam" they hung up the phone. I closed out the remote access, and called HP.

To anyone searching for smarturl.it/hptool.

This is 100% a scam.

My experience is they they had me look at the event viewer (which will always have scary looking warnings and errors if you've had your pc long enough) then tried to get me to download a remote agent tool.

They called from 1(800)-711-2884 (18007112884)

I got 19 calls from them over the last week so I finally decided to check into it.

I don't even own an HP anymore.  I worry someone got a hold of their phone number list.

NEVER download software when requested to by a cold call.

If you get something like this and are worried end the call and then reach out to HP (or whoever they say they are calling on behalf of) directly.

It upsets me that this must be working on some people.
