Hi @Cocoa50,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

When the internal camera disappears after a Windows update, it usually indicates that the driver is missing, disabled, or not detected by the system. Follow the steps below in order.

Check Physical Camera Switch / Privacy Key

Some HP laptops include:

  • A camera shutter switch
  • Or a keyboard privacy key (F8/F10 depending on model)
Locating the webcam privacy switch on the side of the computer
Locating the webcam privacy switch on the display

👉 Press the camera key once and observe:

  • Indicator light changes
  • Camera becomes available

Perform BIOS Recovery (If Not Detected at All)

  1. Turn OFF the laptop
  2. Press and hold Windows + B
  3. Press the Power button for 2–3 seconds, then release Power (keep holding keys)
  4. Wait for the BIOS recovery screen

👉 This restores hardware recognition at the firmware level

Step 1: Check Device Manager (Camera Detection)

  1. Press Windows + X → Device Manager
  2. Expand:
    • Cameras
    • Imaging devices

👉 Look for:

  • “HP Wide Vision Camera” or similar
  • Any Unknown device

If the camera is hidden:

  1. Click View → Show hidden devices
  2. Check again under Cameras

Enable Camera (If Disabled)

If you see the camera listed:

  1. Right-click the camera
  2. Click Enable device

👉 Once enabled, the camera should immediately appear in apps

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
