Note: You may need a new system board which has connector for keyboard lights.

Yes, it is possible - the backlit keyboard is an option on the Elitebook 840 series (532 models).
If the model you have (or the model for which you are asking the question) has a backlit keyboard, the indicator (key to switch on the feature) is along the top of the keyboard as illustrated in the Service Guide on Page 12 . Key:

The keyboard is listed as "user replaceable" (Page 7)
