@Ugonna_10, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion dv5 is having issues resuming from sleep/hibernation when the lid is closed and then reopened — a pretty common problem with older laptops running Windows 10, especially if they were originally designed for Windows Vista or 7.Here’s a step-by-step guide for a permanent fix:

🔧 1. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Since the Pavilion dv5 is quite old, make sure it has the latest BIOS and chipset drivers:

  • Visit the official HP Software and Drivers page.
  • Search for HP Pavilion dv5 (use the full model number, e.g., dv5-1234tx).
  • Download and install BIOS and Chipset updates (if available for Windows 10 or 7 — 7 drivers usually work for 10).

⚠️ If the BIOS update is risky for your current system state, you can skip it unless necessary.

⚙️ 2. Change Power & Lid Settings

You’ll want to make sure Windows is handling lid-close actions properly.

  1. Press Win + X → Click Power Options
  2. On the right, click Additional power settings
  3. In the left pane, click Choose what closing the lid does
  4. Set both On battery and Plugged in to “Do nothing” under “When I close the lid”

This avoids sleep/hibernation which may cause the display not to wake.

🧠 3. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can cause weird issues with wake/sleep on older hardware.

  1. Go to Control Panel → Power Options
  2. Click Choose what the power buttons do
  3. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  4. Uncheck “Turn on fast startup (recommended)”
  5. Click Save changes

🔌 4. Update or Roll Back Display Driver

Sometimes, an incompatible display driver causes this issue.

  1. Press Win + XDevice Manager
  2. Expand Display adapters
  3. Right-click on your display adapter (e.g., AMD or Intel) → Click Update driver
  4. Choose Search automatically first
  5. If the issue persists, try Roll back driver (if available)

Or install the Windows 7 version of the driver in compatibility mode.

💤 5. Disable Hibernation (Optional)

If you're okay without hibernation, disable it completely:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Admin
  2. Run: powercfg -h off

This disables hibernation and Fast Startup.

🧪 6. Test the Sleep Behavior

  • Close the lid.
  • Wait a few seconds.
  • Open it again.
  • If the screen is still black:
    • Try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del
    • Try Win + P twice to toggle displays
    • Plug in an external monitor to check if display output was redirected.

Set the laptop to never sleep/hibernate and just manually shut it down or sleep it using the Start menu.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
