Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!

My HP Envy x360 has 100's of times has been connected to my 3 year old Sony Smart TV with a new 2025 HDMI cable.  It stopped  connecting 2 weeks ago.  Did I toggle a switch on my Sony TV or did I toggle something on my HP Envy laptop which causes it not to connect my laptop to my TV screen?

Hi @Pam230

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it must feel when something that worked seamlessly hundreds of times suddenly stops. Thank you for already confirming the HDMI cable is new and that this setup worked regularly before.

Let’s walk through a few clear steps together to bring back that smooth connection between your HP Envy x360 and your Sony Smart TV:

Step 1: Confirm TV Input

  • On your Sony TV remote, press the Input/Source button.
  • Make sure the HDMI port you plugged into is selected. Sometimes TVs default back to another input after updates or power cycles.

Step 2: Check Cable Seating

  • Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends and firmly reconnect it.
  • Try a different HDMI port on the TV if available, as ports can occasionally become less responsive.

Step 3: Windows Display Settings

  • On your HP Envy x360, press Windows + P.
  • Select Duplicate or Extend to force the laptop to project to the TV.
  • If nothing shows, try Second screen only to test if the TV receives the signal.

Step 4: Graphics Driver Refresh

  • Right-click the Start button, choose Device Manager.
  • Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics driver, and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for drivers. This ensures your HDMI output is supported with the latest updates.

Step 5: Display Detection

  • Right-click on the desktop, select Display settings.
  • Scroll down and click Detect under “Multiple displays.” This forces Windows to look for the TV.

Step 6: Power Cycle

  • Turn off both the laptop and TV.
  • Disconnect the HDMI cable, wait 30 seconds, reconnect, then power on the TV first, followed by the laptop.

You’ve already done the right thing by checking the cable and confirming past success. With these steps, we’re focusing on both the TV input and the laptop’s display settings, since either side could have toggled a setting during updates or resets.
