my laptop turns white when switched on, external monitor working good

This suggests that the problem is likely with the built-in display, rather than the graphics card. Here are some steps to troubleshoot:

 

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the laptop and disconnect all external devices.
  2. Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  3. Hold down the power button for 15 seconds to discharge residual power.
  4. Reinsert the battery, plug in the adapter, and turn on the laptop.

Step 2: Check Display Connections

  1. If you're comfortable, open the laptop and check the display cable connection.
  2. A loose or damaged cable can cause a white screen issue.
  3. If reseating the cable doesn’t help, the display panel may need replacement.

Step 3: Update Graphics Drivers

  1. Connect the external monitor and open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager).
  2. Expand Display Adapters, right-click your GPU, and select Update Driver.
  3. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
  4. Restart the laptop and check if the issue persists.

Step 4: Run HP Diagnostics

  1. Visit the HP Support page and download the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool.
  2. Run a Display Test to check for hardware issues.

Step 5: Boot into Safe Mode

  1. Restart the laptop and press F8 repeatedly before Windows loads.
  2. Select Safe Mode with Networking.
  3. If the screen works in Safe Mode, the issue may be software-related—try uninstalling recent updates or drivers.

Step 6: Consider a Display Replacement
