Hi @jdenver9,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a rather unique issue with your HP Pavilion laptop where the screen brightness changes and becomes uncontrollable when the microphone is in use. This could be caused by a few different things, including software conflicts, power management settings, or an unusual hardware interaction. Here are some steps you can take to potentially resolve this issue:

Check Power Settings:

  • Go to the Windows Control Panel and open the Power Options.
  • Check the settings for "Dim the display" and "Adjust plan brightness" both on battery and while plugged in. Ensure these settings are not linked to any microphone activity (which typically they should not be, but it's good to verify).

Review Advanced Power Settings:

  • In the Power Options, click on “Change plan settings” next to your active plan.
  • Click on “Change advanced power settings”.
  • Browse through the options and look for any settings that could be linking microphone usage to brightness, such as USB settings or multimedia settings that adjust power saving during video playback.

Update Audio and Graphics Drivers:

  • Even though you mentioned updating your drivers, double-check that both your audio and graphics drivers are fully up to date. Visit the HP Support website, enter your model number, and download the latest drivers.

Disable Audio Enhancements:

  • Right-click the sound icon in the system tray and select 'Sounds'.
  • Go to the 'Playback' tab, right-click your default device, and choose 'Properties'.
  • Go to the 'Enhancements' tab and check the box to disable all enhancements.
  • Test to see if the issue persists.

Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Think about any recent software installations that might coincide with when the issue started. Consider uninstalling recent software to see if the problem resolves.

Perform a System Restore:

  • If you suspect that a recent change to your system is the cause, performing a system restore to a point before the issue began might help. This can revert any changes that might be causing the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
