Pavilion 15-ab200 (touch screen)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Pavilion 15t-ab200 randomly locks up or freezes requiring hard shutdown and reboot. Actions taken so far but no help: latest BIOS to F.91 rev A; new SSD; new DDR3 compatible RAM 16Gig; clean fan, vents, duct; clean install of Windows 10 to current version; latest intel 520 graphic driver; previous Intel 520 driver; now using Win 10 basic graphic driver (disabled driver update); with and without HP Coolsense; and 3rd party fan app....all no help.  This laptop is only four years old, and was spotless inside. Help needed please; out of ideas other than buy another laptop.

I reviewed your post and I understand that the computer is freezing randomly.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you run a system test on the computer to make sure whether it is a hardware or a software-related issue.

Refer to the below article for detailed steps.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

The HP Diagnostics passed all system and component tests.

The may be a problem with the 1803 and onward versions of Windows 10 (currently using 2004), the Intel 520 DCH drivers, and/or the Intel 520 onboard chip.

The random freezing/lock-ups have occurred with all versions of the Intel 520 DCH driver.

1. Random lock-ups with the latest Intel 27.20.100.8853 directly from Intel

2. Random lock-ups with latest Windows 10-installed driver 27.20.100.8681

3. Random lock-ups with all DCH versions for this laptop from the HP support driver download site

Seems most stable only when downgraded to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and all other driver versions are fully uninstalled. While this seems to work, Windows keeps updating to its 27.20.100.8681 even when the Device Installation settings are disabled to prevent being updated, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate\ is set to 1.

I have also performed a clean install of Windows 10, and only installed the allowable HP drivers.

Thank you for the update.

I recommend you install the driver from the below link and then follow the below steps to stop the driver from getting updated from Windows updates.

https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers

To stop Windows from doing automatic driver updates, navigate to Control Panel > System & Security > System > Advanced System Settings > Hardware > Device Installation Settings. Then choose "No."

I had already disabled the update; reference my message 30 August 2020:  "even when the Device Installation settings are disabled to prevent being updated, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate \ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate\ is set to 1."

I have now uninstalled the following HP-originated drivers (I cannot remember which ones exactly (e.g. Broadcom V's Realtek, but the ones accepted were removed); instead relying on Windows provided equivalents:

Audio: SP73189

Diagnostic: SP99005

Firmware: SP76532 (HGST HDD); SP77075 (Seagate HDD)

Firmware Chipset: SP96325

Intel Chipset:

  - SP71923 (Trusted Exec Engine)

  - SP71977 (IO); SP72039 (CPPC)

  -SP72862 (Driver Inst Util)

  - SP72866 (MEI SKL)

  -SP72870 (Dynamic Platform & Thermal)

  -SP72871 (SGX)

IO Devices:

  -SP71829 (HP Wireless Button)

  -SP81891 (Synaptics Touchpad)

  -SP71985 (ELAN Touchpad)

Network:

  -SP73190 (Realtek LAN)

  -SP73310 (Realtek BGN Wireless)

  -SP74988 (Broadcom Bluetooth)

  -SP75249 (Broadcom Wireless)

  -SP96885 (Realtek Wireless)

  -SP98325 (Realtek Bluetooth)

Software Media:

  -SP74986 (Intel Wireless Display)

  -SP76209 (Intel Wireless Display)

Software Solutions:

  -SP76383 (HP System Event Util)

  -SP77062 (HP Support Assistant);

  -HP Framework

Storage: SP73574 (Rapid Storage)

So far; so good--no random lock ups/freezing. I will check the Support Assistant Driver site to see if there are newer drivers than the ones above. Thanks for the continued help.

Sorry for the delay. This took time.....I re-wiped drive my drive, performed a clean Windows 10 installation. and installed the HP drivers from the HP Support site for my laptop (15t-ab200, with on-board Intel 520 graphics driver). Unfortunately, it still randomly froze on me, even on the first day.

As a consequence, I went my own route; wiped drive, performed another clean installation of Windows 10, and installed the drivers directly from Intel using the Intel Driver Assistant (The only HP driver currently installed is COOLSENSE) . All of the non-Intel drivers are from the Windows 10 OS. Here it is four days later, and the laptop currently runs great without freezing.  Now that I may have resolved this myself, Wndows 10, 20H2 update is now on my radar (after imaging my drive).

I can only surmise  and may be wrong about this, that, due to the age of my four-year old laptop, HP may not be maintaining their HP drivers for my laptop (15t-ab200) following the various major Windows 10 updates. If this is the case, that is most unfortunate; my nine-year old Dell Inspiron is still running at its original clip without any Dell driver support issues, and being at the Windows 10, 2004 update.
