HP Spectre x360 Convertible
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

After last update of windows 10, the auto-rotate option doesn't work anymore.

I followed this post https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/After-Windows-10-Creator-Update...

But the problem is still there, and the Registry looks fine.

I've noticed that that in "Device Manager" I have an issue about the following "Sensor",

  • HID Advanced Sensor Collection (in Device Manager)

It gives the following error: “This device cannot start. (Code 10) The process hosting the driver for this device has terminated.”

I guess this might be related with auto-rotation problem.

Can you help, please?

Hi DavidSMP,

Thanks for your help.

Few days ago, I finally had the time to go through a "Fresh Start" (I choose the option to keep my files), and this solved my issue. (Main drawback was that it took me few hours to re-install all the apps and software I need to use).

Now everything works good!

Best,

@Nanotech-touch,

Good Day. Thank you for taking an interest in the HP community. I understand that autorotate does not work after a windows 10 update.  I will be really glad to assist you here.

Fabulous description and superb diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you correctly, I would require more information regarding this:

  • Does the switch between desktop mode and tablet mode work correctly?

To answer your question the tablet mode may get disabled because of an update due to numerous reasons.

  • The Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver which is a key driver for this to work correctly.
  • The switch from tablet mode to desktop mode may not work correctly after the update sometimes.
  • Sometimes it could be that the issue is hardware related, with the sensors not working correctly and the Windows updates could be coincidental.

For now, please try these steps:

Go to control panel

2. Go to Display

3. Go to Adjust Resolution

4. Be sure "Allow the screen to auto-rotate" is CHECKED.

If this does not work then try this link: https://hp.care/2ihSeEb

Also, uninstall the keyboard in device manager and restart the computer.

Solution 1:

The keyboard in Windows 10 has an automatic detector to disable the keyboard and the trackpad as soon as it becomes a 'tablet'. To access it go to the following menu items:
Control panel (NOT SETTINGS) -> Keyboard (use icons) -> Keyboard Lock -> Auto-Lock the keyboard and touchpad (recommended)
You can use these settings to disable the keyboard in tablet mode.

Now check if it gets fixed. If it does not continue Steps from solution 2.

Solution 2:

Some of the users who had the similar issue have mentioned in some forums that the issue is fixed by adjusting the angle of the tablet. When the laptop is rotated sideways it attempts to switch to tablet mode, even when you have not adjusted the screen angle. The sensing is done by an orientation sensor in the base of the laptop, not in the hinges. So, to turn the keyboard back on and to go to laptop mode try tilting the whole laptop towards you slightly and check.

Now check if it gets fixed. If it does not continue Steps from solution 3.

Solution3

  • Then install the latest version of HP support assistant.
  • Please perform all Windows update again.
  • Then update the Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver from https://hp.care/2syreDe and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Please run the Intel driver utility and update it from the Intel website.
  • Also, ensure that you have the latest bios update by running HP support assistant.
  • This should do the trick for you if there is no hardware issue with the computer.
  • Also, uninstall and reinstall the display drivers:
  • Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand display adapters>then select the display drivers that are listed and right-click on it and uninstall the drivers.
  • Check the box that states delete the software for this device.
  • Then restart the computer and update the bios chipset and graphics drivers from this link: http://hp.care/2syreDe  Select the country and type the product# of the unit. Then follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Then check if the issue gets resolved.
  • Update the touchscreen firmware if it is available.

Now check if it gets fixed. If it does not continue Steps from solution 4.

Solution 4:

Go to Device Manager > System devices > Intel Integrated Sensor Solution and ensure that the driver is enabled.

Now check if it gets fixed. If it does not continue Steps from solution 5.

Solution 5:

Please, backup your important data and perform a Microsoft Push Button reset of Windows 10. from this link: https://hp.care/2toQrBj  If you follow the correct on-screen instructions, then there should be no data loss.

Now check if it gets fixed. If it does not continue Steps from solution 6.

 Solution 6

Backup your important data and perform a system recovery to factory settings on your computer by following instructions from this link: https://hp.care/2I7YDxk

This should do the trick for you.

  • If the issue persists, then contact HP phone support via this link: https://hp.care/2moMFSc  and follow the onscreen instructions as the issue may also be hardware related after performing all these steps:

They should be happy to take care of it if the computer is under warranty. If recovery does not work correctly, you could contact HP phone support to order recovery media and try again.

Perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Good luck to you. I will keep a watch for your response.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Hi DavidSMP,

Thanks for the help, but all your suggested solutions didn't work.

  • I can do it manually, but even in tablet mode the auto-rotation issue persist. Anyway when I flip the laptop, it asks me to switch in tablet mode, so it somehow understand that it has been flipped. However, the screen does not rotate.
  • I can’t find the “display” , “adjust resolution” setting in Control Panel, can you tell me how to find this setting?
  • Uninstalling the keyboard and restarting, it didn’t help
  • sol. 1
    • I can’t see “keyboard Lock” in Control Panel
  • sol. 2, it didn’t work
  • sol. 3
    • I downloaded and installed the driver for Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver, https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers, but auto-rotation is still not working
    • I uninstalled the display drivers and then re-installed it, but this didn’t solve the issue
  • sol. 4, yes, it is updated and enabled
  • I don’t want to waste time with a reset

UPDATE, I forgot to mention the following

I run the SensorDiagnosticTablet troubleshoot, and this is the replied I got

Sensor Monitoring Service not started       Not fixed

Start Sensor Monitoring Service       Failed

I tried to start the “Sensor Monitoring Service” manually, but I couldn’t as it kept saying “the service started and then stopped”

(I don't know if this can be of any help)

Thanks and any other idea on how to fix this issue?

@Nanotech-touch,

It looks like you were interacting with @DavidSMP, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out,
I'm the Jeet_Singh & I'm at your service.

After reviewing your post thoroughly, I understand you have tried all possible troubleshooting steps and still having the issue, and you don't want to perform a reset on the PC.

At this point of time, In order to find out if it's a hardware or software related issue, the last resort would be to perform a push button reset if that does not help then to perform a complete system recovery.

If the issue persists even after the system recovery then it's for sure it's more likely a possible hardware failure.

Please note that we're not overloading you with a lot of troubleshooting steps. Instead, just like you, we're eager to ensure that the problem gets resolved.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Solution 5:

Please, backup your important data and perform a Microsoft Push Button reset of Windows 10. from this link: https://hp.care/2toQrBj If you follow the correct on-screen instructions, then there should be no data loss. There is an associated YouTube video on how to do it. A push-button reset restores the computer to factory default settings without causing data loss if the correct on-screen instructions are followed.

Now check if it gets fixed. If it does not work, then continue the Steps from solution 6.

FYI, I solved this issue by going to: Device Manager > System Devices > Intel Integrated Sensor Solution (right click) > Update Driver > Look Online.

It downloaded something, and a few minutes later it was fixed. No Fresh Start or reset required. Not even a restart.

Hope it helps.

I had the same exact issues as described here...for your reference my laptop is the HP Spectre X360 Convertible 15-ch0xx

Last night, the auto-rotate/lock keyboard and touchpad functions went missing again! This was the 3rd time it has happened to me, in a span of 6 months. Every time that the auto-rotate/lock keyboard and touchpad functions did not work it seemed that the only way to solve the problem was to refresh the Windows 10 install.

I got tired of doing the same routine that took up my time... after several attempts again using whatever suggestion I found in the forums (short of editing registry files - just simple install/uninstall of drivers ranging from the keyboard to the sensors), in my frustration I held the power button to shut the machine down - and didn't let go on that power button for like a minute or so, and went to bed...

When I restarted the next morning - VIOLA!!! Auto-rotate/lock keyboard and touchpad functions worked like magic!

Upon reviewing what just happened, I realized that I unwittingly did HP's standard procedure on POWER RESET - holding the power for at least 8 - 10 seconds to reset the hardware.

So for folks experiencing the same nightmare like I did - try to do the POWER RESET first, before putting the blame on the Windows 10 system (and putting countless hours again on reinstalling apps!!!)

Thank you Gorg_Karlo!

A life saver!

My ZBook Studio x360 G5workstation developed two faults which your suggestion fixed:

!. Some keyboard lights were misfunctioning, eg. caps lock light on all the time, even when the PC was completely shut down and Num Lock light not working at all, even though both buttons actually worked.

2. Auto rotation of the screen when flipping the display over not working and rotation lock on but on-screen switches greyed out.

I spent about 2 hours with HP support trying to fix #1 at which point they concluded the keyboard needed replacing (under warranty luckily). I am still waiting 10 days later for the engineer to come. (It seems they have to get a new one sent via a slow boat from China). Of course, this is no longer necessary.

On#2, I spent hours with HP again, ending when they wanted me to re-install Windows with all the work that entails. I also then spent literally several days on the internet myself trying every suggestion under the sun without success.

The amazing thing is that nobody from HP ever suggested your simple solution.

I hope it helps many others.

Many thanks again!
