HP laptop and old dell monitor

I have a relatively new hp laptop. connected an old dell monitor so I would have two monitors. I don't want them necessarily running the same things.  I want to move items from one to the other. how do I do that?

Please use Extend (not Duplicate) option - use Extend these displays as shown on the following link:

THANKS FOR recommending "extend.   I doesn't work, it just draws it out, but I can't drag and drop it from one to another.

Must be something to do with with your machine. We use this function/option everyday. We use 2 external monitors (+ notebook screen) with a DisplayLink Certified dock.
