I have the same problem with a HP Pavilion Aero 13. The laptop just spontaneously rebooted one day, and after it came back external monitors on the USB-C port were no longer working, either by dock or by direct USB-C to DVI cable. There were no software updates. Another symptom is that external hard drives only run at USB 2.1 on the USB-C port, instead of 3.2 SuperSpeed. Another, possibly related, symptom is that the battery now discharges when the laptop is powered off, at a rate of about 70% a day.
I have tried all suggestions in these forums - firmware reinstall, Windows reinstall, drivers reinstall, turning off and holding power button for 30 seconds. Nothing fixed the issue. I believe this is a hardware fault.
Trying installing USB Device Tree Viewer, then plug in a USB 3 device (e.g. external USB-C SSD), and verify whether or not the USB version appears as "2.1 High-Speed" or "3.2 SuperSpeed". If it's "2.1 High-Speed" and the issue isn't software related (e.g. the USB-C connected monitors still don't work if you boot Ubuntu from a USB drive), then it's a hardware issue and the laptop will have to be returned to HP to be fixed.

Hi @josshn,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I can offer some general suggestions that might help you troubleshoot the issue with your HP laptop's USB-C port and HDMI connectivity.
-
Check for Driver Updates: Ensure that your graphics drivers, USB drivers, and any other relevant drivers are up-to-date. Sometimes, driver updates can resolve compatibility issues.
-
BIOS/UEFI Update: Check if there's a BIOS or UEFI firmware update available for your laptop on the HP support website. Sometimes, firmware updates can address hardware compatibility issues.
-
Reboot Your Laptop: Simple as it may sound, a reboot can sometimes resolve issues related to hardware not being recognized.
-
Try a Different HDMI Cable: Even if you've tried different adapters and monitors, the HDMI cable itself might be the culprit. Test with a known working HDMI cable.
-
Reset Display Settings: Go to your display settings and make sure the correct display is selected. You can try extending or duplicating your display to see if the HDMI connection is recognized.
-
Check Power Settings: Some laptops may have power-saving features that affect external display connections. Make sure your laptop is not set to a power-saving mode that could disable external displays.
-
Roll Back Updates: If the issue started after a recent update, you might want to consider rolling back to the previous version of the operating system or graphics driver to see if that resolves the problem.
Remember to back up important data before making any significant changes to your system, such as driver updates or firmware updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Yes it's a hardware issue for me too. HP's official repair agent have confirmed that it's a hardware problem and they were unable to fix it. The retailer who I have an extended warranty with has offered a partial refund rather than replace the laptop.
