Hi @libravixen15,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your older Windows 8 laptop only turns on when plugged in, but the screen stays completely black, the Caps Lock light keeps blinking, and the Wi-Fi light stays orange. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check the Caps Lock blink pattern
Turn the laptop on and watch the Caps Lock light closely.
Count how many times it blinks in a row (pause, blink again).
This pattern is an error code that tells what hardware is failing.

Try a hard reset (power drain)
Turn the laptop off → unplug the charger → remove the battery (if removable).
Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
Reconnect the charger only and try turning it on.

Check with an external monitor
Plug the laptop into a TV/monitor using HDMI or VGA.
Turn the laptop on and press Fn + F4 (or the display-switch key).
If the external screen works, the internal display or display cable is failing.

Test the memory (RAM)
If your laptop has a removable RAM cover:
– Power off and unplug it
– Remove the RAM sticks
– Clean the gold contacts gently and reseat them
– Try booting with one stick at a time
Bad RAM often causes black-screen + Caps Lock blinking.

Check if the laptop is overheating instantly
When you press power, listen for the fan.
No fan + blink code can mean the motherboard is failing or the thermal sensor is tripping.

Look for signs of screen failure
Turn the laptop on and shine a flashlight at the screen from a close angle.
If you can faintly see the desktop, the backlight or display cable is damaged.

I hope this helps.
