Hi @Heymac55,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP 17 Laptop is having trouble powering up, and the fan running but no other signs of life can be caused by a few possible issues. Since you've already done some troubleshooting, here are additional steps to help you pinpoint the problem.
Check for Power Button Issues:
- Ensure that the power button is not stuck or faulty. If the button isn't engaging properly, it could prevent the laptop from turning on. Try pressing the power button firmly several times, or try using an external keyboard (if supported) to check if the laptop responds.
Recheck the DC Jack and Power Connections:
- Even though you've replaced the DC jack, it's possible there’s a loose connection or a faulty jack itself. Double-check the DC jack, power cables, and connectors to ensure that power is properly being supplied to the motherboard.
- If you have a multimeter, you can check the output of the power adapter to confirm it is supplying the correct voltage.
Reseat the RAM and SSD Again:
- Sometimes, components can be slightly misaligned. Try removing the RAM and SSD completely, then reseat them firmly back in their slots. Make sure there’s no dust or debris in the connectors.
Check for Short Circuits:
- If something was dislodged or accidentally shorted during the repair process, it could prevent the laptop from turning on. Carefully inspect the motherboard for visible signs of damage or burnt areas.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- You’ve already attempted a hard reset, but try it again with the following steps:
- Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (again, if not done recently).
- Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reconnect the power adapter and try powering the laptop on again.
Try Booting Without RAM or SSD:
- If there's no display or any other signs of power, remove both the RAM and SSD, and try turning on the laptop. This can sometimes help identify if a component is causing a failure.

Check the Screen/Display:
- It’s also possible that the laptop is booting, but the display isn’t functioning. Try connecting the laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI cable to see if you get a signal.
CMOS Battery Reset:
- Sometimes the CMOS battery (small coin cell battery) can cause boot issues if it’s drained or not functioning. You could try disconnecting the CMOS battery for a few minutes and then reconnecting it.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden and thank you for your help. I did all of the above! i took out the 1 stick of ram and the battery, i plugged it in and turned the power on. apparently my ram went bad because the power button light came on and the fan went quite. i ordered another stick of ram and will try it tomorrow. once i get it and install it, hopefully all will go well and i"ll let you know. tx again!
