HP Probook 4540s
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I want to enable my HP Probook 4540s to connect to the 5Ghz band on my wifi router. The installed network card only supports 2.4Ghz. Are there any suitable replacement network cards available? How would I install one? Would it be simpler for me to use a USB key and, if so, which one?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi:

Notebooks made around the time yours was made, may have a BIOS whitelist.

That means you can only install one of the wifi adapters listed in chapter 3 of your notebook's service manual, and it must have the HP part number on it or it will not work.

The only dual band wifi card that was supported in your notebook was this one...

Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235    HP part # 670292-001

You would need to see if you could find a used but tested and working model on eBay.

Search by the HP part number, not the model of the wifi card.

Chapter 4 has the wifi card removal and replacement procedure.

If you would rather use a dual band USB wifi adapter, this one seems to be a good choice...

Thanks. I've done a quick web search on the wireless card, but couldn't find anything available here in France and, after Brexit, I'm wary of buying stuff from the UK because of VAT and duty complications. So, it looks like I'll go for the dongle you suggested. That will be simpler too.
