Envy 1KT13UA#ABA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have connected a Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Mouse 3600 to my new Envy laptop. After a period of inactivity (about 5 minutes) the mouse does not respond, and I have to move it around for about 4 seconds before the cursor starts moving on the screen. It's like the mouse goes to sleep and needs to wake up.

The computer is up to date on all drivers and components according to both Windows and the HP Support Assistant. I have looked in the Windows Power Management settings and find nothing about allowing Bluetooth to go to sleep. I have looked in the BIOS settings and found nothing about allowing devices to sleep either. I did find a setting in the mouse driver, "allow this device to wake the computer." This setting isn't directly relevant, but its checkbox was already checked. (And I noticed that I can't wake the laptop with the mouse, but that's a topic for another thread.)

@RadioPhil

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand the Bluetooth mouse 'sleeps' after 5 minutes idle, then needs to wake up,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Did you make changes to the Microsoft management console?

Have you checked if any alternate Bluetooth device works without these issues?

While you respond to that, here's what I recommend you do:

  1. Open the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). Type services.msc in the Start Searchbox, and then click Services in the Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue
  2. Double-click the Bluetooth Support service.
  3. If the Bluetooth Support service is stopped, click Start.
  4. On the Startup type list, click Automatic.
  5. Click the Log On tab.
  6. Click Local System account.
  7. Click OK.
  8. If you prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

If the issue persists, follow the below steps:

  1. Right-click on Start, and select Device Manager.
  2. In Device Manager, click the arrow next to Bluetooth, and select the Bluetooth radio.
  3. Right-click the Bluetooth radio and select Properties.
  4. Select the Power Management tab, and see if there is a check next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Then, On the Advanced tab for the Properties of your Bluetooth radio, check the HCI and LMP versions.

If these versions are 6.0 or higher, then update to the latest radio driver available by checking Windows Update. If there is no update available, check with the manufacturer of your PC using their support site. You can also uncheck the box next to the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option in the Device Manager, as listed above.

To access Windows Update:

Windows 10: Select Start, and choose Settings. Click on Update and Security.

Let me know how that pans out

Thank you for responding to my forum message.

I tried connecting a Bluetooth keyboard temporarily to the laptop as a test. It does not have the issue. I tried connecting the Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse 3600 to a desktop computer I have here. The issue is present on this computer. Sounds like the problem is with the mouse, not the HP laptop.

Nevertheless, I performed your steps 1-8. The issue persists.

In the second list of steps 1-4, there was no check in the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" checkbox. I think this is becuase I had already unchecked it when doing my own troubleshooting before posting in this forum.

The HCI and LMP versions are both 8.4352. Since these are "6.0 or higher" this means your instructions to update my radio driver apply. But both Windows Update and HP Support Assistant offer no new updates.

You didn't mention these, but I found two additional places in Device Manager. Under 'Human Interface Devices' there are two items, 'Bluetooth HD Device' and 'Bluetooth Low Energy GATT compliant HID device,' that have a power management tab in which I unchecked the 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' checkboxes. The issue persists (although the wakeup time seems to be less, about 2 seconds instead of 4).

It still looks like I need to get a different mouse.

@RadioPhil

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

You are right, if the Bluetooth keyboard works however, the mouse doesn't, its gotta be the mouse,

I recommend you check with either Microsoft support or the store to get a alternate mouse.

About the updates, the way it usually works, is the manufacturers of each part sends the updates when its needed to HP, we add our limitations and upgrades to the driver to ensure there aren't any compatibility issues within other devices on the PC and then release it...it looks like the driver for this device isn't release by Microsoft yet, hence I suggest getting another model of the Bluetooth mouse if you want to stick to the same brand.

Dear mr Riddle Decipher thank you for your information, i also having the same problem with my new Envy laptop (when i connected a bluetooth mouse, the mouse will be unresponsive after i not using it for 5 seconds or more, and to activate the mouse i need to move it around for 3-4 seconds)

but i was lucky, your guide to change the "startup type to automatic" works like a charm and i have no more issue with the bluetooth mouse

thank you very much i've spent almost 2 days to solved this problem and it also make me stressful (i almost return the mouse to the shop)
