Hi @latteecrie

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details about Bluetooth not working on your Windows 10 laptop. It’s good that you’re checking whether an external USB Bluetooth adapter is necessary—most HP notebooks already have built‑in Bluetooth hardware, so in most cases you should not need to purchase an additional device. Let’s focus on confirming and restoring the built‑in functionality.

Check Bluetooth in Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Bluetooth.
  • If you see your Bluetooth adapter listed, right‑click it and select Enable (if disabled).
  • If it is missing, click View > Show hidden devices.

Run Diagnose & Fix in HP App

  • Open the HP App from your Start menu.
  • Select Diagnose & Fix.
  • Run the scan to automatically detect and repair Bluetooth issues.

Update Drivers via HP App

  • In the HP App, go to My devices.
  • Select your notebook, then choose Updates.
  • Install any available Bluetooth or chipset driver updates.

Verify Windows Settings

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
  • Ensure Bluetooth toggle is visible and turned on.
  • If the toggle is missing, it indicates the driver or hardware is not being recognized—step 2 and 3 above usually resolve this.

Perform a Hardware Reset

  • Shut down the notebook.
  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect and power on.
  • This clears residual states that can affect Bluetooth detection.

You can follow these steps directly from HP’s official guidance here:
HP PCs – Bluetooth Troubleshooting

By following these steps, you should be able to restore the Bluetooth toggle without needing an external USB device.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
