No internal wifi card upgrades are possible in your model unless you can find a BIOS mod.

You should be able to find the BIOS version and date in your notebooks' BIOS system information window.

I have also zipped up and attached below, a free utility that you can run that shows many different hardware properties.

Run it, close out of the summary window.

On the left side of the program window, click on the Motherboard and on the right side of the window, all of the general motherboard info will be listed.

Two of those lines on the report will show the BIOS date and BIOS version.

For example, the PC I am on now shows this...

BIOS Date: 03/24/2015

BIOS Version: J01 v02.28

You think the Intel's were Upgradable but not the AMD?  Is there any way to know for sure?  I may go with a low profile adapter but still considering the internal if possible.  It don't look like there is a mod for my pc on bios-mods.

HP Recommended

Only on the dv7-7000 and newer models.

On the dv7-6000, 6100, 6b and 6c models, none of the internal wifi cards are upgradable.

I can't believe I run into Walls everytime I try to Upgrade this thing.  Makes me not want to buy anymore HP's!  Luckily this one was a hand me down.  I also was not happy about the AHCI Thing a while back, when I installed my Samsung EVO850.  What was it, there is no AHCI available, or it was in AHCI by Default and not switchable?

Looks like I'll have to resort to a low profile adapter, maybe this one?

TP-Link Mini - AC600 USB 2.0 Wifi Adapter

Thanks very much Paul for all your time and knowledge!

You're very welcome.

Yes, that little adapter should work fine and give you up to 433MBPS throughput on the 5.0 GHz wifi band with an AC router.

Your model is set to ahci by default even though the Samsung magician software indicates that AHCI is not enabled.

It's that way for all AMD based notebooks.

Just ignore that report because it isn't true.

Will do Paul.  I noticed a big difference with that other adapter I had laying around, so this one should be even better!

I just noticed the NETGEAR AC1200 WiFi USB Adapter – USB 2.0 Dual Band

I don't know if I would benefit from this one over the TP-Link?  It's quite a bit more expensive but looks like it rates higher/faster.  Do you think this laptop would be able to use this faster adapter?  I do have a modern router/gateway from comcast, running about 175Mbps on my desktop.  I'm sure it is "ac" capable.

This is the one I tested on my laptop: NETGEAR AC600 Dual Band WiFi USB Mini Adapter (A6100)

Hi:

The AC1200 wifi adapter should have a max throughput of 867 MBPS on the 5.0 GHz wifi band with an AC router.

So if you want to spend the extra cash, that would be what the specs would be.

My ISP gives me 200 MBPS download speeds, so pretty much any AC adapter would exceed that speed anyway.

Just wanted to give you an update Paul.  I had to go the cheap route because what I really want is a new laptop LOL!

This is what I got from amazon:  AC600 Nano Wireless USB Adapter Archer T2U Nano

Here are my findings with my current ISP Giving me 100Mbps.  I just downgraded myself a few days ago because I don't download that much stuff an the cost was killing me!  Quite happy with the before tax 17 dollars and change.

Those are very good numbers out of that model adapter from a USB 2 port with a 100 MBPS service.

The max throughput on the 2.4 GHz wifi band would be 72 MBPS, so you are getting way more than half of that.

And the 5.0 band speed are great!
