HP laptop model 15-dy1971cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Anything  that can stop  one from easily replacing the wifi card 802.11AC (1x1) with a 2x2 version?

Laptop: HP laptop model 15-dy1971cl. Does this model have 2-antennas to support 2x2 replacement? Quote for cost by HP to replace the wifi card if I sent the laptop to them?

At amazon it seems to only be available as 1x1.

Hi:

There is only one antenna present in your notebook.

You would need to completely disassemble the notebook including the display panel area to run a second antenna.

No one here would be able to answer your question regarding if HP could do the work for you.

My assumption is they could and my assumption is the cost to do the work would exceed the cost you originally paid for your notebook.

May i ask where to get this 2-antenna info from about other models? Pavilion seems to have it.

How much of a difference 2x2 makes compared to 1x1, as 5G is not as common yet? What exactly is different between 1x1 and 2x2 ?

Is some kind of a USB dongle wifi 2x2 still possible to attach externally (considering internal wifi card cant bevreplaced due to 1 antenna)?

Hi:

On all HP models made in the last 5 years or so, the single band wifi adapters have one antenna.

The notebook's don't have a spare antenna in there.

The only dual band AC card that has one antenna is the Realtek 8821CE, which is why that makes an excellent and easy upgrade from the RTL8188EE or RTL8273DE.  No additional antenna is required.

So how much of a difference in speed, you ask?

The Realtek RTL8822BE/CE 2 x 2 AC card has twice the throughput on both bands as the RTL8821CE.

The 8821 has a maximum throughput of 72 MBPS on the 2.4 GHz wifi band, and it has a maximum throughput of 433 MBPS on the 5.0 GHz wifi band with an AC router (150 MBPS with a dual band N router).

The 8822 has a maximum throughput of 144 MBPS on the 2.4 GHz wifi band, and 867 MBPS on the 5.0 GHz wifi band with an AC router (300 MBPS with a dual band N router).

The Intel 2 x 2 dual band cards have double that (and more, if it is an AX model) of the Realtek 8822.

Yes, they sell 2 x 2 USB wifi adapters.  Even some of the nano size ones that hardly stick out of the USB port can go as high as 866 MBPS.

Since I am only paying for 200 MBPS download speeds, even the basic 1 x 1 433 MBPS AC card provides enough throughput to handle the 200 MBPS speeds I am paying for.

I don't move a lot of files over my home network, so not having the fastest wifi card out there is not an issue for me.

Sorry i dont understand what you mention about last 5 yrs. The model in OP has dual band.  Is the antenna part of notebook fixed hardware or the network card? How come the HP pavilions on hp store have 2x2 cards? E.g this one https://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-i7-1065G7-Processor-Touchscreen/dp/B081YW3NQK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keyw...

The antennas are not part of the wifi card.

Some notebooks have 2 x 2 AC cards, some have 1 x 1 AC cards and some have 2.4 GHZ wifi N cards only.

Some have Realtek cards, some have Intel cards.

It depends on the model.  There is no rhyme or reason for it.

Normally the models with 2 x 2 cards cost more, all other things being equal.

I was referring to the above line. The model in OP is "15-dy1971cl" which has dual-band AC card. So how come it only has 1-antenna in the latptop?

Where do you look up to find how many antennas a given model has? Pavilion within last 5 years have 2-antennas (2x2 cards).

It has one antenna because the Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11b/g/n/ac (1x1) Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 4.2 Combo is the ONLY AC card that works with one antenna cable.

I have nothing further to contribute.
