I'm trying to find out if my laptop will update to 5gs on WIFI?

Hi,

It does not depend on the OS if the wifi card supports 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz. It is hardware. A b,g,n wifi module will only support 2,4Ghz whereas an ac module will support both 2.4 and 5Ghz bands.

Basically you need to replace the wifi module in the notebook if possible or get a wifi dongle which supports 5Ghz.

If you provide the complete model or product number (not serial) of the PC we can take a look at the specs and possible solutions, Here is link to HP support page showing how to find it:

Let me know,

David
