Just saw your post - I bought an Inamax AC1200 several months ago for around $20 through Amazon and just ran a speed test and got 166Mbps download and 17Mbps upload.  Have taken it with me on trips and it has worked good - so far.

Exactly! I just bought a new one, and I didn't like that 5gz doesn't work. I mean, all my existing devices (even my parents 5 yr old phones can connect), I don't see why this new hp laptop cannot connect... This is so ridiculous, can't they do sth abt it... Bought the new laptop at a low price, this could be one of the many drawbacks...

can I just get a usb device to plug into my hp2000 that will enable me to get 5ghz from my router?

You sure can!  I went through 3 different ones - first 2 stopped working or would work intermittently.  Your speed will be better, but still not awesome.  My new laptop that's 6G compatible gets about 125mb p/s whereas the best I could get with a USB on the old HP was about 40mb - still better than 10!  Exact same 5G wifi, same router, but just can't handle the speed.
