Cannot connect to the internet on laptop

My friend gave me her old laptop she wasn’t using anymore. She told me that she could not connect to the internet with it. So I checked to see if the adapter was installed and it says nothing about a wireless adapter for internet. I then checked in the bios. It had an exclamation point next to the network adapter. I still cannot connect to the internet.
