Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi

So my problem is that every time I restart the laptop and check the status and speed of the ethernet it has changed to 10mbps. The cable I am using it cat6 and I already know it works at the correct speed on this computer. Completely removing the drivers and doing a fresh reinstall sorts the problem out. It reports 100mbps again and speedtest confirms this. It changes back to 10mbps again after restarting the computer though!!

I have tried the drivers supplied by HP on the driver page. I have tried downloading the driver from Realtek directly and of course just using the drivers that Windows 10 provide, in fact using the Window 10 search for updated driver online installs yet another driver. All of which upon install are working fine, reported at 100mbps and speedtested but as already mentioned, upon restart the speed is set to 10mbps and the only way to sort it is a full remove and reinstall. I have tried changing Speed and duplex to options other than auto, 100mbps and 1gbps, neither of which have any effect. Only by removing and reinstalling am I getting the speed.

I seem to think that this started after a recent Windows update. I have already had issue with this laptop in Windows choosing to replace the audio driver with one labeled SST which caused no end of problems for a while.

Does anyone have any ideas as what to do about this? I do not want to have to fresh install the drivers each and every time I use the laptop. At least it does work by doing this though.

I have searched many forums related to this issue yet most seem to be from years ago and none of the suggested fixes have produced a result beyond the fresh install of drivers.

Any help would be most appreciated.

@AbstractRobbie Here's what I'll need to help you out:

Have you attempted to update the network adapter & BIOS?

(Click here to find and install it, if you haven't done it yet)

While you respond to that, here's a few reasons why the Ethernet could be slow or the speed limited and what you could do to resolve it:

Step 1: Detecting and removing spyware and adware

If the computer becomes slow after connecting to the Internet, or your home page changes to a page you do not want, or unwanted desktop links appear, or advertising windows pop up repeatedly, then the computer probably has spyware or adware installed. Spyware and adware can be very difficult to remove manually. For more information about spyware and how to remove spyware from the computer, refer to Computer Might Be Infected by a Virus or Malware (Windows 10, .

Step 2: Scanning for and removing viruses

Many viruses use an Internet connection when a browser window is opened and can cause the computer to slow down or stop responding. For more information about how to scan and remove viruses, refer to Computer Might Be Infected by a Virus or Malware (Windows 10, .

   NOTE:

After scanning and removing spyware and viruses, run Windows Update to update your computer.

Hi

Yes the BIOS is the latest version and all the drivers are the latest versions. I have since tried completely reinstalling the whole laptop from scratch. It begins with the speed being reported at 100mbps but after restart again, reports at 10. If I do the same thing, removing the driver completely and reinstalling it is back to the correct speed.

Incidentally I have tried the drivers from HP as well as installing directly from Realtek. The same thing occurs.

As for virus's and spyware. The machine is regularly checked and is only used specifically for conferencing and streaming. I do not surf or open emails on this laptop but as I said I have completely installed again from scratch.

Thanks for replying!

I would recommend you try recovering the PC using the cloud recovery method. Refer to the document https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c06162205

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
