Hello, my pc has been running at 100mb/s on ethernet for a while now, at first i thought it was an issue with my cable so i didn't look too far into it but yesterday i did some more testing and figured out that the cable is fine, I've tried updating the NIC drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling it, forcing it to go at 1 gigabit full duplex while also disabling Green Ethernet, Energy Efficient Ethernet, Gigabit Lite and Power Saving mode, but none of it worked. I know for a fact that my network can get up to 900mb/s and I'm unsure what to do.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your gaming laptop isn’t utilizing the full speed of your internet connection, especially when you’ve tried so many fixes. Let’s work through this together to get your Ethernet speed back to its potential.

 

  • Have you tested the Ethernet connection on another device to confirm the network can achieve speeds above 100 Mbps?
  • Is the Ethernet cable you're using a Cat5e or higher, which supports gigabit speeds?
  • Are you connecting directly to your modem/router, or is there a switch or additional device in the connection path?

 

Let's try these steps. 

 

Check the Ethernet Port Link Speed:

  • Right-click the Network icon in the system tray and select Network & Internet settings.
  • Click on Ethernet, then select your network, and check the Link speed under properties.
  • If it shows "100 Mbps," the port might be set to Fast Ethernet instead of Gigabit Ethernet due to a configuration or hardware limitation.

Test a Different Port on the Router/Modem:

  • Connect your Ethernet cable to a different port on your router or modem to rule out issues with a specific port.

Verify the Network Adapter Configuration:

  • Open Device Manager > Network Adapters, right-click your Ethernet adapter, and select Properties.
  • Under the Advanced tab, check the "Speed & Duplex" setting. Ensure it's set to Auto Negotiation or manually set it to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex if supported.

Replace or Test with Another Ethernet Cable:

  • Even if the cable appears fine, test with a certified Cat6 or Cat6a cable, as older cables like Cat5 may cap the speed at 100 Mbps.

Update Router Firmware or Reset Network Settings:

  • Log into your router's admin interface and check for firmware updates. Outdated firmware can sometimes limit speeds.
  • On your PC, reset the network settings by going to Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.

 

If these steps don’t solve the issue, there could be a hardware limitation or a deeper configuration issue. Or you may check with your Internet service provider.
