Sorry that you weren't able to easily do something to get the card to work in the 2540p.
Dell doesn't have BIOS whitelists on many of their old PC's
I installed a dual band Broadcom wireless N card with Bluetooth in an old Dell Latitude e4200 and it worked just fine.
I had an Intel 7260N card too but it has exactly the same specs as the Broadcom card and I had two Broadcom spares lying around.
The notebook ran fine on W7, so I upgraded it to W10 (when you could still get the free upgrade through last September) and gave it to one of my son's friends who has a young daughter that he said would make a good 1st laptop to use.

So, finally last step...
Because we can't modify whitelist, we can to use external modules.
For reasons of compatibility with Win7 and reasonable dimensions, TP-Link T3U Nano was chosed.
Brief comparison between native (Intel 6200AGN) and this solution when connecting to a WiFi6 router on 500 Mbps WAN channel :
