My computer uses an ethernet cable to connect to internet. Just got a new USB a Ethernet adaptor today. No Wi Fi in my house. This HP envy has been having problems staying connected to the internet. I just used this sites connection test and found no issues. My friend has a Linux computer connected to same modem that never has connection issues. While writing this description my computer went offline. How do I fix this?? Thanks

Hi @9Richi,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your HP Envy laptop using a USB-to-Ethernet adapter keeps disconnecting from the internet, while other devices on the same modem stay connected. Let’s go through a few steps to troubleshoot this.
1. Check the USB Ethernet Adapter
Ensure the adapter is firmly connected to the laptop and the Ethernet cable.
Try using a different USB port on your laptop (preferably USB 3.0 if available).
Test the adapter on another device to confirm it’s working properly.
2. Inspect the Ethernet Cable & Port
Check the Ethernet cable for damage.
Connect the cable directly to the modem or router if possible.
Make sure the router port is functioning by testing with another device.
3. Update Network Drivers
Open Device Manager → Network adapters.
Right-click the USB Ethernet adapter and select Update driver → Search automatically.
Alternatively, visit the adapter manufacturer or HP support page to download the latest driver for Windows 11.
4. Check Power Management Settings
In Device Manager → Network adapter → Properties → Power Management, uncheck:
“Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
This prevents Windows from disabling the adapter to save energy.
5. Reset Network Settings
Open Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset.
This will remove all network adapters and reset settings to default.
Restart the laptop and reconnect to the Ethernet adapter.
6. Test Static IP (Optional)
Assign a static IP address matching your network configuration to rule out DHCP issues.
This can stabilize connections on USB adapters that occasionally drop connections.
7. Check for Conflicting Software
Temporarily disable firewall or antivirus to see if it stabilizes the connection.
Some security software can interfere with USB-to-Ethernet adapters.
I hope this helps.
