Was able to get a good deal on the laptop and for the most part I can live with the compromises.  The one issue that I have had is with the Realtek wireless not being as quick and the bluetooth having issues in Linux.  I would like to swap the wireless out with an Intel version, 9260 etc but trying to find out if HP is still whitelisting adapters. I have tended to stay away from HP and IBM in the past due to this issue since I believe I should be able to upgrade my hardware as I see fit, I thought I had read that HP was no longer using whitelist but would like some confirmation before swapping.

Thanks

@bishoptf Here're the parts tested and approved by HP for your device: Click here to verify

(As an upgrade/custom enthusiast I personally love the idea of upgrading the device as well, However, HP recommends that you go easy on it as the device is equipped with parts that perform at its optimal performance and also, the upgradeable parts listed in HP articles are purely for your ease, though the decision to upgrade will be at your own discretion)

That said, HP does support Linux as off now, so you may want to switch to a Windows OS.

Well it was a simple question which I was looking for an answer, which was does HP still whitelist devices in the BIOS.  I believe the no longer do but I was having issues with an intel wireless card.  It appears that right now with the latest linux kernels intel firmware has some major issues.  I also had a killer 1535 card which uses atheros chipset and it is working fine.  The realtek stuff is hit or miss and with the latest linux kernels its a miss with the bluetooth.  Works when you first boot up but drops out after a suspend.

I only use windoze when someone pays me too, I moved to linux in the MS XP days and haven't looked back, it's not perfect but it light years better than windoze, egads.

I think the answer is that HP no longer whitelist components but still would like that verified. 🙂

@bishoptf As per the screenshot attached and the link provided, there doesn't seem to be any whitelisted cards as such,

Although, personally it's better to go for a plug & play USB wireless dongle to avoid compatibility issues rather than changing hardware components.
