Me and my girlfriend both own HP pavilion laptops purchased in mid 2020 as a gift and have been playing them relentlessly since, Recently hers has started Blue Screening randomly and mine has done it a few times now, I have a 1 TB External HD for any games but she doesn't have nearly as much downloaded as me and hers blue screens far more than mine does, she hasn't downloaded anything suspicious and she attempted running SFC / SCANNOW and CHKDSK codes and it doesn't allow her because "You don't administrator privileges" can include a picture, It started happening out of nowhere and we are just looking for anyone who might know anyway to fix this we don't have money for new laptops lol.

@wafilbo2, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP Pavilion!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I totally get how frustrating this must be, especially since you’ve both been using your HP Pavilion laptops for years without issues. Let’s try to get your girlfriend’s laptop back to normal without spending money on a new one!

Since her laptop is blue-screening more often than yours, there could be a few possible causes—software conflicts, corrupted system files, or even hardware wear over time. Let’s go step by step to troubleshoot:

1️. Get Administrator Access for System Scans

If she’s unable to run SFC /SCANNOW and CHKDSK because of admin privileges, try this:

  1. Click on the Start Menu, type Command Prompt, and right-click it.
  2. Select Run as administrator (if prompted, enter the admin password).
  3. Now try running the following commands one at a time:
    • sfc /scannow (to check and repair system files)
    • chkdsk /f /r (to scan and fix drive errors – it may ask to schedule on restart)

If she’s still getting the same error, it might be worth checking if her account has admin rights:

  • Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Manage Accounts and ensure she’s set as an administrator.

2️. Check for Windows & Driver Updates

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install any pending updates.
  • Open Device Manager, check for driver updates (especially graphics and chipset drivers). You can find drivers on the HP Support website.

3️. Look for Error Codes

When the Blue Screen appears, does it show an error code like "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT", "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED", etc.? If you can note it down or take a picture, it’ll help pinpoint the issue.

4️. Check Storage & Overheating

  • Since her laptop has fewer games than yours but crashes more often, check if her storage is too full. Low disk space can cause system instability.
  • Make sure the laptop isn’t overheating—if it’s running hot, cleaning dust from vents or using a cooling pad might help.

5. Test RAM & Run Hardware Diagnostics

Faulty RAM can cause random Blue Screens. Here’s how to check:

  • Press Win + R, type mdsched.exe, and restart the laptop to run a memory diagnostic test.
  • HP also has built-in hardware diagnostics: Turn off the laptop, press the power button, and immediately start pressing F2 repeatedly to access the HP Hardware Diagnostics tool. Run a Memory Test and Hard Drive Test to see if any errors pop up.

If you can share the exact error code from the Blue Screen or the results of the diagnostic tests, we can narrow it down further! Hope this helps, and fingers crossed we can fix it without spending a dime. 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
