My HP 15-fc0274AU starting spamming keys "6,+,/////". The F5 key is lighting up so I think it's the FN key that doing this thing. Tried updating the keyboard driver and troubleshooting but theres no problem. I tried long pressing FN + F5 and it worked.

I want to know what caused this problem or what does it mean so I can prevent it in the future. Thanks.

Hi @diwalpi1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're describing—a keyboard "spamming" keys—can be caused by several factors, ranging from hardware malfunctions to software glitches. Here's a breakdown of what might have caused it and how you can prevent it in the future.

Possible Causes

Sticky or Malfunctioning Keys:

  • Physical debris or wear could cause keys (e.g., FN, F5, or 6,+,/) to stick or trigger unintentionally.

Keyboard Short Circuit:

  • Moisture or damage to the keyboard circuitry can lead to erratic behavior, such as random key presses.

Driver or Firmware Glitch:

  • Corrupted or outdated keyboard drivers or BIOS firmware could cause unexpected behavior.

Software or OS Settings:

  • Keyboard shortcuts or hotkey conflicts might lead to unintended input behavior.

Static Electricity or Electrical Interference:

  • Static build-up or interference might temporarily cause key spamming.

Why Did Long Pressing FN + F5 Work?

Pressing FN + F5 likely reset or recalibrated the keyboard's state. Some laptops have hidden key combinations to reset certain features like stuck modifiers (e.g., FN, Shift, or Ctrl). This indicates a software glitch rather than a hardware fault.

Prevention Tips

Regular Maintenance:

  • Keep your keyboard clean and free from debris. Use compressed air to blow out dust and crumbs.
  • Avoid eating or drinking near your laptop to prevent spills.

Check for Moisture:

  • If there's any chance of moisture exposure, shut down the laptop immediately, let it dry, and clean it thoroughly.

Update Firmware and Drivers:

  • Ensure your BIOS, firmware, and keyboard drivers are always up to date to avoid glitches.
  • Visit HP's support site for the latest updates for your specific model.

Disable Problematic Hotkeys:

  • If the FN + F5 combination causes issues, consider remapping or disabling it using software like AutoHotKey or native Windows settings.

Inspect for Physical Damage:

  • If this happens frequently, the keyboard might have hardware damage.

What to Do If It Happens Again

Reset the Keyboard State:

  • Long press FN + the affected key (e.g., F5) again to reset.

External Keyboard Test:

  • Connect an external USB keyboard to verify if the problem persists. If the issue doesn't occur on the external keyboard, the internal one might be faulty.

Perform a Power Reset:

  • Turn off the laptop, unplug all peripherals, and press the power button for 30 seconds to discharge residual electricity.

Check for Malware:

  • Run a full system scan to rule out malware that might simulate keypresses.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
