Hi @Busybookkeeper,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer now has a Wi-Fi Direct icon but you were able to print before without any issues, it's possible that the printer's Wi-Fi Direct feature has been enabled, causing a change in its connectivity options. This shouldn't prevent you from printing, but it might have altered the way your printer connects to devices.

Wi-Fi Direct is a feature that allows you to print directly from your wireless-capable devices (such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops) without the need for a traditional Wi-Fi network or router. With Wi-Fi Direct, your device can connect directly to the printer to initiate the print job.

To get your printing working again, follow these steps:

  • Check Printer Connection: Ensure that the printer is turned on and connected to power. Also, make sure it is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your devices if you want to print wirelessly through the local network.
  • Reboot the Printer: Sometimes, a simple reboot of the printer can resolve connectivity issues. Turn off the printer, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
  • Disable Wi-Fi Direct: If you were not using Wi-Fi Direct before and the recent change seems to have caused issues, try disabling Wi-Fi Direct on the printer settings. You can usually find this option in the printer's control panel or settings menu. Refer to your printer's manual or visit the HP support website for specific instructions on how to disable Wi-Fi Direct.
  • Reconnect to Wi-Fi: If you were previously using a local Wi-Fi network to print, ensure that your printer is connected to the Wi-Fi network. Check your printer's Wi-Fi settings and reconnect it to your home or office network.
  • Update Printer Drivers: Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer or device. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause printing problems.
  • Restart Devices: If you're trying to print from a computer or mobile device, try restarting the device to refresh its connection.
  • Check Network Connectivity: Make sure your computer or device is properly connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer.
  • Test Printing: After checking and adjusting the settings, try printing a test page to see if the issue is resolved.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
