I am using Windows 11 on my laptop.

It does not have a SIM slot.

I am told you can use a physical SIM card adaptor or an eSIM

Is this true ?

Also Cellular settings do not show up as a menu item under my Network & internet setting

I also checked under Advanced Settings under Network & Internet settings

My question is 2 fold

1. Can I use a SIM on Windows 11 that makes it act like a phone ? I am not talking about data link to my Android phone

2. I want to eb able to use my PC without using a WiFi connection or a HotSpot connection but wan to be able to sue it with a SIM card and get the data connection. What this means for example is that the PC can also act as a hotspot for my Android phone (Think of those good old days when you needed a modem for your landline to get an internt connection but now you can get a VOIP phone number on your internet connection LOL)

Hi @Ankush43, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Let's clarify what you can and can't do:

1. Can I use a SIM on Windows 11 to make it act like a phone (not just linking it to an Android phone)?

Not exactly. Windows 11 does not have native telephony features like a smartphone, even if your laptop had a built-in SIM slot. You can't make regular calls or send SMS directly like a phone. However, you can use third-party apps like:

  • Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp Web for voice and video calls over the internet.
  • Google Voice, Skype Number, or other VoIP services to get a phone number for calls & SMS over data.

2. Can I use a SIM card for mobile data without WiFi or a hotspot connection?

Yes, but only if your laptop has a built-in LTE/5G modem or supports an external LTE/5G modem (via USB or M.2 slot). Since your laptop does not have a SIM slot, you have two options:

Option 1: Use an External USB 4G/5G Modem (Dongle)

  • Buy a USB LTE/5G modem (like Huawei E8372, Netgear Nighthawk M1, or Alcatel LinkKey).
  • Insert a SIM card into the modem, and it will provide a cellular internet connection to your PC.
  • Your laptop will detect this as an Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection, depending on the device.

Option 2: Use an eSIM (Only if Your Laptop Supports It)

  • Some newer business-class laptops (ThinkPad, Surface, Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook, etc.) have built-in eSIM support.
  • To check if your laptop supports eSIM:
    1. Go to Settings > Network & Internet.
    2. Look for a Cellular option. If missing, your laptop likely doesn’t support eSIM.

Since you mentioned that "Cellular settings do not show up", your laptop likely does not support eSIM.

What About Using Your Laptop as a Hotspot for Other Devices?

If you have a USB 4G/5G modem or an eSIM-enabled laptop with a data connection, you can turn your laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot:

  1. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot.
  2. Turn it ON and select the source (your cellular network).
  3. Connect your Android phone or other devices to the hotspot.

Final Answer for You

Since your laptop does not have a SIM slot and no Cellular option in settings, you cannot use a SIM card directly. But you can:
✔️ Use a USB 4G/5G modem for data.
✔️ Use a VoIP number for calls & SMS.
✔️ Enable mobile hotspot if using an external cellular connection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
