Hi @zipstart,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop is not recognizing a USB-C Ethernet adapter, there are several steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue.
- Check compatibility: Ensure that the USB-C Ethernet adapter you are using is compatible with your HP laptop model. Consult the documentation or visit the manufacturer's website to verify compatibility.
- Update drivers: Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for both the USB-C port and the Ethernet adapter. Visit the HP support website and search for your laptop model to download and install the latest drivers.
- Test the adapter on another device: Connect the USB-C Ethernet adapter to another device, such as a different laptop or desktop computer, to check if it is functioning correctly. This step will help determine whether the issue lies with the adapter or your HP laptop.
- Check USB-C port functionality: Try connecting other USB-C devices to the same port on your HP laptop to see if they are recognized. If other devices work, it suggests that the USB-C port is functional, and the issue may be specific to the Ethernet adapter.
- Power cycle the laptop and adapter: Shut down your laptop, unplug the power cord, and remove the battery (if removable, applicable to some models). Disconnect the USB-C Ethernet adapter. Wait for a few minutes, then reconnect the battery (if applicable) and power cord. Turn on your laptop and reconnect the USB-C Ethernet adapter to see if it is detected.
- Disable power-saving settings: Some power-saving features on laptops can interfere with USB devices. To check if this is the case, go to your laptop's power settings and disable any options related to USB power saving.
- Check for BIOS/UEFI updates: Visit the HP support website and check if there are any BIOS/UEFI updates available for your laptop. If updates are available, follow the instructions to install them. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve compatibility issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
