HP Spectra x360 15-bl0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have AT&T fiber optic 1000 internet. My Spectra can not get more than about 30Mbps upload speed, close or far from the router. All my other devices go much higher than this. Especially, the Ipad Pro. My 8 year old Dell XPS 15 with a draft N card gets over 200Mbps down/up  close to the router. My Ipad Pro gets over 400Mbps down and up.  Does anyone get more from this card. I am working with HP and trying to find someone else's internet to hook up to and test it. The strange thing is I originally bought a Dell XPS 13 with the same card and sent it back because of the bad upload speeds. I bought this HP and got the same card and darn if it isn't doing the same thing. What is going on with this. Can't Intel or Microsoft get drivers that work or is it this card. I give up with it. I had AT&T send me 3 different moden/routers to test and none did any better.  Can someone experience good upload speeds with this card.

Update: I took my laptop to Best Buy and they checked the speeds on their WiFi. Download was about 120Mbps and upload was 23Mbps. They weren't sure about the upload speed and felt that this card seemed to have some restrictions.  I'm not sure that replacing this card would make any difference. This AC 8265 card is not a good card with this restriction.   Although, the performance of the laptop is good, I guess I will just have to live with it.

Hi @tkd01,

Good Day. Thanks for visiting the HP community. I reviewed the post regarding issues slow internet connections because of an Intel wireless card. Superb troubleshooting and splendid description of the issue before posting. Hats off to you on that score. 🙂 I will gladly assist you here.

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you check locally with Best Buy if another card could make a difference here?

For now, let me keep you posted about a few things.

  • As you’ve tried the upload and download speeds on different networks and worked with HP and Best Buy regarding this without any improvement You could try this:

A great workaround would be is to get a USB wifi dongle that supports 5GHz band and plug it to one of the USB ports of the computer and then connect to the wifi router. You should be able to order one for a song. It is economical as well. You could find one online via the Amazon or eBay portal or at a local Best Buy or Staples Store. This should do the trick for you.

Please check this link: http://hp.care/2vbqL8n out for further assistance

The trick is to remain patient. Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

Hi

Sometimes in the advanced settings there are things to select....

ETH Link Speed.png

There is also a Transmit Power option.

Well, I've pretty much given up on this issue. These WiFi speeds are so inconsistent that it seems impossible to figure out where the problem could be. Yesterday I went into the room where the router is and decided to do a speed check, and I couldn't believe that it was 355.50Mbps down and 382.70Mbps up. I came back out to my living room and checked again. It wound up being 5Mbps down and 1Mbps up, after almost shutting down completely.  Then after a few more checks and a reboot, it was back to 160Mpbs down and 15 up. Going back into the router room it was 231Mbps down and 24Mbps up. So, this is really rediculous. I do not want to get a USB adapter and having that taking up a USB slot just to possibly get better performance, from WiFi, that the laptop should be doing.  I think that in the future, I might just have to look at the Macbook Pros. Seems the Apple devices I have just work better than the Windows stuff.  Now, here is where I get so frustrated. My 8 year old Dell XPS 1640 with the draft N card is pretty consistent with the WiFi speeds. They do vary, but my download speeds are usually in the 160Mbps and upload speeds are usually in the 100Mbps, in my living room away from the router. What gives with these new AC cards. Are the drivers that screwed up and can't work with Windows 10 or what?  I went through 3 different modem/routers from AT&T to check, and none made much diffference. Maybe in the future things will be fixed right. I do want to say though that the performance of the HP Spectra x360 works well. The latency is excellent. The download speeds are OK, although should be better on a fiber optic network. I just can't understand the lousy upload speeds with the AC-8265 card.  Thanks

Hi @tkd01,

I read the post and the descriptive response. I precisely understand where you come from and how you feel about it.

There are 2 options that you could decide on. One is to install another Wifi card on the computer after checking with a local technician for higher upload speeds before doing it.

The other option is to use a USB wireless adapter that is capable of High speeds and uploads. These are just suggestions and it is left to your discretion to work on them. You are the boss.

I honestly hope things pan out well for you in this regard. OK, after pretty much giving up on this, and talking with HP tech support; the last resort was to set the laptop back to original factory configuration. Well, guess what, it soloved the problem. Here is what was discovered.

1. The original adapter drivers were: 19.50.1.5 dated  (3/15/17). This gives me the capabilities to get over 500Mbps download and over 400Mbps upload. This is what I should at least be getting close to the router on WiFi.

2. When I received the laptop and set it up originally, it worked fine and then started to have  considerable WiFi problems, mainly with speeds. I lost half of my download speeds and only got about 10% upload speeds from the download speeds.

3. It was discovered that Microsoft was immediatly pushing Intel network adapter 19.71.04 dated (6/25/17).  Not knowing, this is what installed on the laptop right away and was causing the problems.  This is horrible driver.

I called Intel tech support, and discussed this with them, and apparently I am the only person in the world that is having this issue. I don't seem to understand this as it is obvious that there is a problem. Altlhough, you really need a good high speed internet to realize that this is happening. Most people might just have the standard slower speeds and don't even realize that there is a major restriction with the updated drivers.

Also, Intel advised that HP should be using the 19.70.05 driver for the AC-8265 card. He gave a link to download, but this driver is no better than the 19.71.04 being pushed by Microsoft.

So, I have worked around getting the 19.71.04 driver by hiding it using the Microsoft hide utility.  This works in my case.  HP really should be aware of this and try to get this fixed. I have my doubts any more as to the knowledge of the tech support personnel other than basic troubleshooting.  The only other issue I am having right now, is some disconnections with the router and not being able to identify the password. Maybe some of these issues will be taken care of later with other updates.  Although, as I am typing this I have not been kicked out of the internet yet. Alls good right now.

Edit: I spoke too soon. Laptop just got through installing the Windows 1709 update and it installed the 19.71.04 drivers again. No control over this. So now am experiencing the same ridiculous download and upload speeds, and still experiencing internet dropouts. Absolutely ridiculous.

Hopefully, HP will pursue this driver issue. I'm just surprised that no one else has brought this up. And, as far as my internet drop out issue; I believe it is related to the new modem/router that was furnished by AT&T.  This particular WiFi router switches bands from 2.4 to 5.0 automatically.  My laptop, when trying to swith is not doing a good job with it. I need to reconnect sometimes with my password, and other times having to try a few times to connect. Once connected it is OK until it tries to swtich again. Lately though, it does seem to be a little more stable. Will just have to observe this.  My other devices seem to switch automatically without issues. Could be some of this driver issue. Will see.

HI @tkd01,

I read the quick response. The original manufacturer of the card should provide the updated drivers. Once it is done, It should ideally be updated on the HP drivers portal also.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

I also agree that Intel should be providing the drivers. But, after discussing this with them they advised that HP should be using driver 19.70.0.5 and sent me a link to install this. After I installed this driver it was no better than the 19.71.0.4 driver that is being pushed by Microsoft, and Intel doesn't seem to know where this driver came from. What!!!
