AY168SA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi!

I have recently upgraded my laptop (HP AY168SA) to an Intel AC9260 wifi card and have encountered an interesting power management issue. Periodically upon waking from sleep or powered-down state, the wifi card will fail to initialise with the error "The miniport has failed a power transition to operational power". Device manager will show the device as failed to start.

Sometimes restarting the machine will fix it. Sometimes it cannot be reset no matter what (battery pull, hard power down, etc). I have set power management to high performance and disabled U-APSD support as well as disabling as many features as possible, restricting to 2.4G / 5G,.

Incidentally, I believe a similar issue was present on the stock wifi card - but it would remain operational in device manager but with no throughput.

I have the latest BIOS+drivers and a clean Windows install.

Hi! @kimthefirst, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have wireless issues with your PC.

Don't worry I'm here to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

Is the wireless driver listed in device manager?

As you mentioned after you wake your PC from sleep the wireless card will fail to initialize and you get an error- The mini port has failed a power transition to operational power.

I appriciate your efforts for trying out the steps before reaching out to us.

Update the BIOS and wireless drivers on your PC and check if it helps.

Update the BIOS using this link: https://hp.care/2EIzALm

Update the wireless drivers on your PC using this link: https://hp.care/2v9wgK3

Try the steps recommended below.

Manually change network settings

Manually changing the network settings can resolve wireless connection issues. Create a restore point in Windows, and then manually change the network settings.
Using the search box on the taskbar, search for and open Create a restore point.
The System Properties window displays.
Click Create.
Type a name for the restore point, and then click Create.
Windows creates the restore point.
Using the search box on the taskbar, search for Command Prompt. In the results list, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
If a User Account Control screen displays asking if you want to allow the app to make changes to your computer, click Yes.

Type the following commands one at a time, pressing Enter after each one.
netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled
To open the TCP Global Settings, type netsh int tcp show global in Command Prompt and then press Enter.
Make sure all settings are disabled except Receive-Side Scaling State.
Close Command Prompt, reboot the system and then try to connect to the Internet.

Also, if you have issues after trying the steps try downloading the latest wireless drivers directly from the Intel website and check if helps.

Download and install the wireless drivers using this link: https://hp.care/2EIzCTu

Note: Before uninstalling the wireless drivers make sure you connect the ethernet cable to your PC and then uninstall the drivers.

Refer this article to know more information about using HP support assistant.

If the issue still persists, uninstall the wireless drivers from device manager and install the drivers using HP recovery manager.

@kimthefirst, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us again.

FYI I'm not a bot and it's just my handle name, hope you are aware of a show called Mr.Robot and I'm a fan of it so I'm using the same handle name.

Did you try the steps suggested from my previous thread?

If you have tried the steps can you tell me if you get any errors on your PC?

Also, try running a system diagnostics test on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are functioning correctly.

Hi,

I recently had this issue with a 9260 I installed in an acer laptop a few years ago. Have had no issues at all, but after the lid got closed while running a bunch of applications and a game it caused the laptop to try and go into standby with programs that don't really do that. Upon wake the wireless card was not being picked up and the event log suggested it was present but not being read. I tried manually adding it but no luck. I left the laptop unplugged overnight, then turned it back on in the morning. It didn't turn on correctly from standby, so I forced a soft reset and upon wake the card was functional again.

Seems like a power cycle did the job. My next plan was to unplug the card physically and plug it back in but so far this has worked. I think the forced standby might have just shorted something out in the card.
I appreciate this is an old thread but figured I'd post this for anyone else who comes across looking for help. (Couldn't post on the intel forums)
