I’m using an HP EliteBook 840 G7 Notebook PC with an Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz adapter, running Windows 11.
I’ve noticed that my laptop is unable to broadcast a Wi-Fi hotspot (share internet connection) when the internet source is also Wi-Fi.
-
The “Mobile hotspot” toggle in Settings is greyed out or fails to start.
-
Using Command Prompt (netsh wlan hostednetwork) shows:
“The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.”
-
PowerShell and other configuration attempts don’t work either.
-
I’ve already tried updating the Intel AX201 driver (latest from both HP Support Assistant and Intel website).
It appears that the adapter doesn’t support Wi-Fi-to-Wi-Fi sharing or “hosted network” mode, but I’d like to confirm if there’s any HP firmware, BIOS setting, or driver update that enables this capability — or if it’s permanently unsupported on this model.
Could someone from HP or another user please confirm whether HP EliteBook 840 G7 with Intel AX201 can share Wi-Fi via hotspot, and if not, is there a recommended workaround (like a compatible USB Wi-Fi adapter)?
Thank you for your help.

Hello.
If you have a company laptop, the setting may be disabled on purpose. Ask your company IT to unblock it.
Check that the Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter in Device Manager / Network Adapters is not disabled. The device is hidden by default.
There is no BIOS setting to disable network sharing. Intel has newer WLAN drivers on their support website if you would like to try them.
There is no separate firmware for the AX201 - the BIOS/System Firmware package for your laptop will also update the AX201 if the firmware is not current. The release notes claim the last time a firmware update for AX201 happened was in 5/2022, so if your BIOS is dated later (or newer than v1.10) then you are at the latest FW level.

Hi,
I checked with an older HP Elitebook 840 G6 - with Intel AX200 - and I could share the a WLAN connection with the hotspot feature in Windows 11, so I would expect AX201 to also work.
You marked my answer as a solution - so did you get it working and can you share what was the reason?

Hi @Jupitero,
Thank you so much for your help. You were absolutely right — the laptop was originally configured for an organization, and the Wi-Fi sharing feature had been disabled. After following your guidance, I was able to re-enable it, and the hotspot is now working perfectly.
I really appreciate your clear and helpful response. Thanks again for taking the time to assist!
Best regards,
Kiruiroba
