Thanks Paul.

I re-installed the wireless driver... still no change in behavior... so the card would be the next step, if a pro can replace it..

You're very welcome.

Can you let me know the driver version and date of the wifi driver?

I'll see if I can find a newer one from another HP notebook that may use the same wifi card.

To find that info, go to the device manager, click on the Intel 2230 Wifi adapter, click on the driver tab, and there you will see the driver version and date.

HP updates the drivers for their business class notebooks more regularly, so maybe there is a newer one I can find there, since Intel no longer provides drivers for that card.

Driver date - 8/22/2013

Version -  15.10.3.2

Tx. for your efforts Paul.

But would the updated driver necessarily solve the issue or does this mean the card should be changed?

You're very welcome.

Try this driver and see if it helps.

If yes, then you don't need to upgrade the wifi card if you don't want to.

If no, then I guess you will have to upgrade the card.

Paul,

I think I already installed this driver.  When I click on the link you provided, it brings up my downloads where that wifi driver is located...  I got this from the webpage you had provided yesterday... it was the dirver to install for 64 bit...

So I will ask a local pro about the card, if they think it will resolve the issue.  My pc still works most of the time, but the internet connection does weaken a lot and can affect Skype more than anything else.

Paul,

I called the computer repair place nearby.  They say it's not the card or the drivers, but that the cables that are in the hinges of the pc have some wireless materials in them and they wear out with time.

So one solution is to buy a USB link wireless device and disable the wireless system in the pc..

They'll test the pc when I bring it in to see if that does the trick.

Thanks for all your time and help...  Just thought you'd like to know.

You're very welcome.

Hopefully that will resolve the problem.

Yes, if one of the antenna cables is damaged from opening and closing the hinges, that could be the problem.

It is highly unlikely both of the cables are bad, or you would have no signal at all.

They added a USB link to act as the wireless receiver... and disabled the internal wireless..

It works like a charm...

I'm glad to know that took care of the problem for you.
